Electrical Fire Major Cause of Home Fires

The National Fire Protection Association is kicking off National Electrical Safety Month, observed in May, by reminding the public to be aware of the risks associated with the use of electricity, and providing safety tips to assist individuals in taking steps to reduce the risk of experiencing a home electrical fire. In recent years, an average of 53,000 home electrical fires have been reported per year. These fires resulted in an average of 500 deaths, 1,400 injuries, and $1.5 billion in direct property damage per year. One of every seven home fires was an electrical fire. More    E-mail article

Accidents Raised Standards, Changed Laws

New Hampshire was just beginning to ramp up efforts to inspect electrical systems at county fairs in 2004 when a carnival worker was electrocuted while setting up a ride in Belmont. Today, the state has safety inspectors who check the rides and separate inspectors from Hilbert's bureau who examine electrical systems, including rides and concessions, at major fairs and carnivals -- when they can get there. Builders Groups, Firefighters Debate Electrical Safety Devices

Requiring modern circuit breakers that could cut the number of electrical fires in half should be a homeowner's choice, not a state requirement, homebuilders' advocates said last week. But requiring the circuit breakers -- which would add $300 to $400 to the price of a $150,000 house -- and child-safe electrical outlets is akin to putting smoke detectors in homes, fire-safety advocates argued during a public hearing of the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission. To help reduce that number, the Canadian Standards Association has come out with a new standard that deals with electrical safety and ties into the 2009 edition of the Canadian Electrical Code. At a seminar on electrical safety in civil construction and industry held by France’s Apave Group last week, participants reported a rise in accidents caused by unsafe electricity supplies.
