Solar Power from Deserts to Grow By 2050 from Red Orbit
According to a recent study, solar power plants in deserts have the potential to generate nearly a quarter of the world’s electricity by 2050. The study, conducted by environmental group Greenpeace, the European Solar Thermal Electricity Association (ESTELA) and the International Energy Agency's (IEA) SolarPACES group, said large investments in solar power could fight climate change and create new jobs. In the Dark about Green Lighting? from IAEI Magazine With the eventual depletion of natural resources and the uncertain international situation, there is an increasing worldwide need for green, sustainable, energy efficient, stylish and affordable mechanical/electrical systems. Of the three disciplines now regulated by the national ASHRAE / IESNA / ANSI1 Standard 90.1 (the United States’ energy standard for other than low-rise residential buildings, which have their own standard), lighting has made the most strides in complying. New and existing buildings, plus alterations and additions now have restrictions. Standard 90.1 is the basis for LEED, IECC and state building codes. More

Overcurrent Protection: Fuses or Breakers? from Consulting-Specifying Engineer Overcurrent is current that exceeds the ampere rating of conductors, equipment or devices under conditions of use, and includes both short circuits and overloads. During a short circuit, current flows outside its normal path. Insulation breakdown or faulty equipment connections can cause short circuits. The load determines circuit current during normal fault-free conditions. However, during a short circuit, electrical current bypasses the load, taking the path of least resistance. System impedance—or AC resistance—determines short circuit or fault current magnitude, which ranges from fractions of an amp to 200 kA or more. More
