New Arc-Fault Breakers to Be Required in 2009 in Ohio from The Columbus Dispatch via RedOrbit
A building requirement aimed at making new homes in Ohio safer from the threat of electrical fires will go into effect a year after originally intended. The new rules, part of the 2008 National Electrical Code, require a special circuit breaker -- called an arc-fault circuit interrupter or AFCI -- on circuits for bedrooms, living rooms, sunrooms and other areas where families gather or sleep. Technology Could Streamline Solar Power from MSNBC A new, compact way to collect sunlight from windows and focus it to generate more electricity could make those multiple expensive rooftop solar panels a thing of the past. The solar panels that cover the tops of some buildings today contain photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity. Unlike burning coal, collecting and converting solar energy releases no greenhouse gases, which warm the atmosphere. Limited efficiency and high construction costs have kept solar from producing more than about 0.07 percent of U.S. energy needs in 2007, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Energy. More
State Rebates Lead More People to go Solar from San Francisco Chronicle California has added enough solar power to its electrical grid this year to light a small town, according to an update released Monday on the state's solar rebate program. Those rebates, which go to businesses and homeowners who put solar panels on their roofs, have funded enough new installations this year to generate 59.4 megawatts of electricity, about enough to juice up 44,550 homes.
