Should You Have a Generator at Your House?

Carbon monoxide poisoning. Electrocution. Fire. With all the possible safety hazards that can occur if you misuse a portable generator, you have to wonder why homeowners take the risks. Richard Friel, an electrical inspector for Tacoma Public Utilities, suggests sheltering a generator under a large tarp, canopy or lean-to. He said some people have tried to run generators in their garden shed, but often that results in the machine choking on its own fumes and shutting off. More

Michigan Department of Transportation Recognizes Standouts
from Government Technology
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced the 2008 recipients of the MDOT Director's Award - the department's highest honor for outstanding service. One of the recipients is Samuel Pruitt Jr., an electrical inspector on the Wayne County Maintenance Contract. Through his efforts, MDOT currently experiences an outage rate of less than one percent for more than 8,000 lighting units in Wayne County. This high success rate is almost unheard of in the industry.More

Tamper-resistant Outlets Now Part of New Hampshire Building Code

The New Hampshire State Building Code Review Board voted to adopt the 2008 National Electrical Code and approved the inclusion of a new child-safety precaution. The requirement states that all 125-volt, 15-amp and 20-amp electrical outlets in new residential construction must be tamper-resistant receptacles. More

Dealing with the ATEX Directive
