Grand Valley State Wins The 2009 Collegiate Cup

NCWA Powerhouse Grand Valley State University GVSU defeated rival University of Central Florida (UCF) 33-18 this weekend at The NCWA National Duals Championship held at Middle Tennessee State University. Grand Valley carted home the now coveted 4 1/2 foot 50 pound Collegiate Cup Trophy to be Displayed at GVSU until next season when it will return to the Championship Venue. More
Southern Virginia's Peter Rose Named Outstanding Wrestler
from NCWA The Southern Virginia University Knights earned fourth place out of fourteen teams at the Apprentice School Invitational on January 24, 2009. SVU finished only half a point out of third place.

Mott Bears in Coaching Ranks
from NCWA Mott Community College Wrestling is making an impact on local high school wrestling teams. Former 2004 National Champion, Kenny Andrews, is the assistant coach at perennial national high school power Davison High School. It appears that Andrews is being primed to take over the reigns for National Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach Roy Hall. Speaking of Andrews, brother Mike Andrews, a former Mott assistant is presently the head coach for Swartz Creek High School.

USAFA Huskies Battle USAFA JV
from NCWA USAFA Prep School wrestlers battled the USAFA JV team today. The Huskies won six of fourteen bouts on the day, but came up a bit short as the USAFA JV came away with a hard fought 43-30 victory. More
Aggies Beating All Competition
from NCAA Delaware Valley College downed its eighth nationally-ranked opponent of the season as the Aggies rolled over Division II's No. 16 Shippensburg University, 38-10, on Jan. 27. The third-ranked Aggies are now 16-1-1 on the year. The Aggies continue their slate against highly-touted foes as they face three top 15 squads during a road trip to Iowa this weekend. They will take on Coe College and Luther College on Jan. 30, and then travel to No. 2 Wartburg College the following day. More
AU Wrestling: Ohl Sets His Sights on Title
from Ashland Times-Gazette Ashland University's Josh Ohl is on a mission, and on Saturday night he continued that mission as the AU wrestling team hosted 10th-ranked Mercyhurst. With weeks, not months or years left in the career of the Eagle senior, Ohl, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, looked as sharp as his 20-2 record might indicate as he rolled to a 25-9 technical fall win against Mercyhurst's Matt Mix.

Wis./Minn. Championships a Success
from NCWA Even with the NCWA National Duals going on there was another smaller, but equally successful, tournament being held to determine some of the best wrestlers in the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Teams from Wisconsin, which included UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Baraboo, and Northland Baptist Bible College met in Winona Minnesota to do battle. In the end champions were determined in 8 weight classes. More
Augsburg has Fine Wrestling Mind in its Young Coach

Among them: Do not lose to St. John's. Matzek, only four years removed from his own days as an Auggies wrestler, faced the Johnnies on Nov. 26 in his first dual meet as interim head coach. Augsburg lost 18-13, falling to St. John's for the first time in 23 years -- and at home to boot. The defeat ended a 92-meet win streak against MIAC opponents that dated to 1986. More
First Rankings Reveal The Best
from NCAA The NCAA released the first of three coaches’ panel rankings for the 2008-09 wrestling season. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn spots for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches across the nation. Each qualifying tournament has five coaches rank two weight classes each from one to 33. A wrestler receives 33 points for a first-place vote, 32 points for a second-place vote, etc. The high and low vote total for each wrestler is dropped to give a final point total. More
Navy Wrestlers Filling Gaps in Difficult Season
from Annapolis Capital It's been one of those seasons for the Navy wrestling program. It seems that everything that could go wrong has gone wrong for the Midshipmen, who have been absolutely devastated by injuries. Five out of 10 starters have been lost for some length of time due to injuries. Three of those grapplers have been lost for the season, headlined by nationally-ranked heavyweight Scott Steele. More
Harner Eyes Another Trip to NCAA Wrestling Championships
from Norristown Times Herald Wrestling at 141 pounds for the Flames of Liberty University, Harner has won his last six matches, with two of those wins coming over nationally-ranked wrestlers. On the horizon is the Big South Conference tournament, where the Flames senior hopes to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for a fourth time.
