Ohio College Wrestler Living His Dream at 45
from The Associated Press
Terence Haynes kept alive a decades-old dream by shedding 200 pounds and earning a spot to wrestle against collegians half his age. At 45 years old no less. Haynes, who weighed 429 pounds just over a year ago, dropped down to 228 on a 5-foot, 9 1/2-inch frame while wrestling at Baldwin-Wallace College. His bulging arm and neck muscles testify to a relentless workout routine meant to exorcise a 15,000-calorie-a-day eating habit that bordered on obsession to cover up everyday problems in life. More

Navy Prep Wins Second Consecutive Northeast Conference Championship

NCAA Announces Allocations for NCAA Championships
from Go Cyclones
The NCAA announced the qualifier allocations for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Each qualifying tournament, including the Big 12 Conference Championships, has been awarded spots per weight class based on Division I winning percentage, rating percentage index and coaches ranking. The Big 12, for example, has been allocated 37 wrestlers to the national tournament. Broken down by weight classes, the conference has been allocated three wrestlers at 125, 133, 141 and 174 pounds; two wrestlers at 149; four at 157 and 184; and five at 165, 197 and 285. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers and those wrestlers, who don’t earn an automatic berth to the national tournament through the qualifying tournament, will still have an opportunity to wrestle for a national championship. That’s because the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet to select 52 at-large qualifiers covering all 10 weight classes. Those selections, which will be announced on March 11, will be based on head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, RPI, coaches ranking and the number of matches contested at that particular weight class. Inspiring Arizona State Sophomore Hoping to Make Run at NCAA Title
from TheMat.com
They were supposed to be having fun. Arizona State wrestler Anthony Robles and his coach, Thom Ortiz, were playing around one day after practice while facing off in the martial art of Jujitsu. But the 185-pound Ortiz wasn’t having much fun against his 125-pounder. “Anthony grabbed my wrist and I had to tap out because I thought he was going to break it,” Ortiz said with a laugh. “He has a death grip.” Gaining the upper hand on a man who outweighs him by 60 pounds is nothing unusual for a guy like Robles. The 20-year-old Robles has spent his whole life defying the odds. Even though he was born without a right leg, Robles has emerged as one of the top collegiate wrestlers in the country. The Sun Devil sophomore is currently ranked No. 11 in the country at 125. He finished one win shy of All-American honors as a freshman. More

Wrestler Chriswell Seems to Have Found a Home at Boise State
from Idaho Statesman
Brent Chriswell bounced from state to state and school to school growing up as the son of a construction worker. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the sophomore wrestler is on his third college in three different states in three years. His latest, and almost certainly final, stop is at Boise State. More
