Northwestern's Herbert Named Top Wrestler, Eyes Olympics

Northwestern's Jake Herbert, named as the 2009 winner of the Hodge Trophy as the nation's top college wrestler, didn't celebrate with a day of rest. Instead, he was training for the U.S. freestyle wrestling championships, a step toward his goal of becoming a 2012 Olympian. Herbert plans to compete April 11 in Las Vegas at freestyle nationals, a qualifier for the world team trials May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The freestyle world championships will be held in September in Denmark. More

Johnson Steps Down as Illinois Wrestling Head Coach

The winningest coach in Illinois wrestling history has retired after 17 years at the helm. Mark Johnson announced his decision to step down as Illini head coach. Johnson leaves behind a legacy at Illinois that includes coaching 45 All-Americans and seven individual national champions. In 2005, Johnson also led the Illini to their first Big Ten title in 53 years and won Big Ten Coach of the Year. In 2001, the Orange and Blue finished fifth at the NCAA Championships, the highest mark for Illinois since 1948. More

Drexel: Oplinger Falls One Match Short of Career Milestone

Jon Oplinger finished off his monumental wrestling career at Drexel with a great performance at the NCAA Championships March 19-21. Oplinger was able to battle his way through the first two rounds of the tournament in the 197-pound division before falling in the quarterfinals to fourth-seeded Tyrel Todd of Michigan. The 197-pounder was then eliminated by Cam Simaz in the Wrestleback bracket to end his hopes of a national championship. More

ISU Wrestling: National Champ Varner Named Team MVP

Jake Varner, the NCAA 197-pound national champion, was named most valuable wrestler for Iowa State this season. Varner, who received the honor for the second straight season, won his first NCAA title in his third straight trip to the finals. The junior placed second at 184 as a freshman and as a sophomore. Penn State Coach Sunderland Resigns

After an 8-12-2 dual meet record and a 17th place finish at nationals this season, Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland informed the team of his resignation as head coach in an e-mail to the squad, sophomore wrestler Mike Lorenzo said. More

Gable Inspires Harvard Wrestling Crowd

That the American wrestling icon was part of the Harvard Wrestling Club’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday made it one of life’s perfect moments. Gable was one of the most accomplished amateur wrestlers in U.S. history and also was the most successful coach in NCAA history with 15 national team titles. More

Bloomquist Named Interim Coach at Shippensburg University

Shippensburg University Director of Athletics Dr. Roberta Page announced Friday that current Raider assistant coach Seth Bloomquist has been hired as the interim head wrestling coach, replacing eight-year veteran Don Tabar. Bloomquist's hiring is effective through the 2009-10 season. Bloomquist has been an assistant coach with the Red Raiders for five seasons after joining the coaching staff prior to the 2004-05 season. He brought with him eight years of head coaching experience at the high school level where he was a standout wrestler himself. More
