Wrestler's Run of Success Could Go Global

Look out, world, Jake Herbert is on quite a roll. In a three-week span, Herbert finished off an undefeated season with his second NCAA title, won the Hodge Award as the nation's top collegiate wrestler and claimed his first title at the U.S. championships. Later this month he'll go to the world team trials, where he'll need to win only one match in his 185-pound class to qualify for his first world championships, Sept. 21-27 in Herning, Denmark. Heffernan Named as New Illinois Wrestling Coach

Jim Heffernan was named Illinois wrestling head coach. He replaces Mark Johnson after Johnson's 17-year tenure at the helm ended on March 30. Heffernan was an assistant coach under Johnson for all 17 years. As a result of Heffernan and Johnson's efforts, the Illini have produced 45 All-Americans, seven national champions and 120 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. As a team, Illinois recorded 10 top-10 finishes in the past 17 years. More    E-mail article

Iowa State Hires Ex-Cyclone Jackson to Lead Wrestling Program

When the telephone rang, a sleep-deprived Kevin Jackson answered — and the voice on the other end told him exactly what he wanted to hear. Jackson, 44, returns to Ames today to be introduced as the Cyclones’ new wrestling coach. Wrestler Getting Shot with Patriots

Rookie minicamps usually serve as an induction into professional football, but for Jermail Porter, the Patriots' camp was an introduction to playing football. The ultimate NFL neophyte, Porter never had so much as gotten in a three-point stance on a football field before the camp, which wraps up today. The 6-foot-5-inch, 310-pounder, signed as an undrafted free agent, looks the part of an NFL player, but he was an All-American wrestler for Kent State, finishing sixth in the heavyweight class at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Cooperman Joins Rutgers Wrestling Coaching Staff

Rutgers head wrestling coach Scott Goodale has announced the hiring of Cory Cooperman (Ithaca, N.Y.) as an assistant coach. The former Lehigh standout will start May 1. Brandt Hired as Waldorf College Head Wrestling Coach

Tyler Brandt is returning to Waldorf College as its head wrestling coach. He has already begun recruiting duties and is “excited about the opportunity to get back to my alma mater and build on the program’s successes.” Since wrestling as a Waldorf Warrior in the late 80s, Brandt has coached athletes in over 200 dual meet victories, placed wrestlers in collegiate programs across the nation, and has become a Gold Level Certified wrestling coach through USA Wrestling. Manning to Stay at Nebraska

Nebraska wrestling coach Mark Manning was offered the head coaching job at Iowa State, but turned it down, a source close to the Husker program said. Manning, who last month led the Huskers to a share of the Big 12 title, met with NU athletic director Tom Osborne earlier this week and reached an agreement on a new contract, the source said.
