Triumphant Return of Wrestling at West Chester University

On Saturday, March 14, a spot on the top step of the award podium marked the culmination of the triumphant return of wrestling to West Chester University after a 20 year absence. That top spot was occupied by freshman standout Dillon Evans, proudly wearing his Golden Ram warm up, as he received his championship medal. Evans captured the NCWA national championship at 149lbs by going a perfect 5-0 through the three day tournament in Hampton, VA. Junior Brandon Banks also competed at nationals at 197lbs, after placing fourth at the Northeast Conference Tournament. Banks won a couple of bouts at nationals, but fell just short of earning All-American status.

Magazine Honors Nebraska Wrestling Coach
from Omaha World-Herald Wrestling Insider News magazine has named Nebraska's Mark Manning as its Dan Gable Coach of the Year award winner. The honor is named after Dan Gable, the legendary University of Iowa coach who won 15 NCAA team championships between 1978 and 1997. Manning guided the Huskers to their first Big 12 wrestling title last season, the first conference title for NU since it won the 1995 Big Eight championship. More

NCAA champion Darrion Caldwell Back on the Mat, Hoping for Chance to Compete at World Team Trials
from USA Wrestling Plenty has changed in the wrestling world since Darrion Caldwell last competed in a freestyle match.
The reigning NCAA champion from North Carolina State arrived at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, but quickly learned that the rules are much different since he last wrestled a freestyle match following his senior year of high school.

At Nearly 50, Former Hawkeye Lewis Returns to First Love
from Des Moines Register Randy Lewis, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, believes he had one more freestyle wrestling tournament in him. That tournament was Northern Plains Regional at Young Arena in Waterloo. Lewis, who is 22 days shy of his 50th birthday, competed at 163 pounds.

Matzek No Longer Interim, Now Augsburg College Head Coach

The Augsburg national champion and Ellsworth native Matzek, who guided the Auggies on an interim basis last season, has accepted the head coaching position on a permanent basis, Augsburg athletic director Jeff Swenson has announced.
