How do two kids — Joe DuCharme of Pagosa Springs and Phillip Sheridan of Centauri — from small towns in rural Colorado make their way into the recruiting class of the University of Iowa, the 2009 NCAA wrestling champion? Answer: Hawkeyes assistant coach Terry Brands and his connection to the Rocky Mountain region. Brands, twin brother of UI head coach Tom Brands, spent time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and ran camps in Pagosa Springs, where he first caught wind of DuCharme and Sheridan. Magazine Honors Nebraska Wrestling Coach

Wrestling Insider News magazine has named Nebraska's Mark Manning as its Dan Gable Coach of the Year award winner. The honor is named after Dan Gable, the legendary University of Iowa coach who won 15 NCAA team championships between 1978 and 1997. Manning guided the Huskers to their first Big 12 wrestling title last season, the first conference title for NU since it won the 1995 Big Eight championship. More

NCAA champion Darrion Caldwell Back on the Mat, Hoping for Chance to Compete at World Team Trials

Matzek No Longer Interim, Now Augsburg College Head Coach

The “interim” tag has been removed from Augsburg College wrestling head coach Mark Matzek’s title. The Augsburg national champion and Ellsworth native Matzek, who guided the Auggies on an interim basis last season, has accepted the head coaching position on a permanent basis, Augsburg athletic director Jeff Swenson has announced. In addition, assistant head coach Jared Evans has also accepted a permanent position on the Auggie coaching staff. More
