USA Wrestling Boosts Bonuses to Compete with MMA

Ben Askren the wrestler wants Olympic gold. But Ben Askren the mixed martial arts fighter needs green. The 2008 Olympian and two-time NCAA champion wrestler at Missouri is dabbling in the no-holds-barred and potentially lucrative world of mixed martial arts to make ends meet. He isn't the only top amateur wrestler to do so, and that's led USA Wrestling to try and stem the tide by offering an eye-popping payout to gold-medal winners at the 2012 games in London. At $250,000, the awards will be the biggest bonus by far available to a U.S. Olympic athlete.

ASU Wrestling Adds Snyder, Askren and Jordan to Coaching Staff

All three individuals, who will join current assistant coach Brian Stith on the staff, were multiple All-Americans and conference champions in their time on the mats and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the mats in Tempe, Ariz. Cherrington New Interim Head Coach at Northern Colorado
from the Examiner University of Northern Colorado has chosen to audition a member of its wrestling coaching staff for the lead role.
Assistant coach Ben Cherrington will serve as the interim head coach of the Bears wrestling program for the 2009-10 season, according to a July 31 announcement from UNC's director of athletics Jay Hinrichs. Cherrington replaces Jack Maughan, who announced in mid-July his retirement from the coaching position, effective immediately, to focus all his energies as the athletic department's director of development.
