Cyclones Eye National Title
from Chicago Tribune
Things could hardly be better for the Iowa State wrestling program. The Cyclones, who tied for fifth at last season's NCAA championships, are ranked second in the preseason USA Today/Intermat/NWCA national team rankings. Iowa State brings back six All-Americans, including two-time national finalist Jake Varner and fellow national title contenders Nick Gallick and David Zabriskie. And coach Cael Sanderson has brought in a stellar recruiting class led by Waverly's Eric Thompson, the nation's top-rated prep heavyweight. Those are all strong indications that the Cyclones are back -- and they seem poised to break out for Sanderson's third year. More

NIU Wrestling Looks to Future from Northern Star Online Last season, the NIU wrestling team was young with five freshmen in its regular lineup.
One of the freshmen, Pat McLemore, surprised the MAC wrestling community by winning the conference championship at 141 pounds to advance to nationals. Overall, the Huskies finished third in the MAC and sent three wrestlers to nationals. This season, head coach Dave Grant is faced with a team that will be just as young. Monarch Wrestlers Crave Sweeter Rewards for '08-09 season
from The Virginian-Pilot Old Dominion's wrestling team posted the highest national ranking in school history, qualified a school-record six wrestlers for the NCAA tournament and had its first All-American in 13 years last season. Not bad, huh? "We did pretty well, but then we choked," returning All-American James Nicholson said of the Monarchs, who went 17-3 in 2007-08. A second-place finish in the CAA tournament and a less-than-stellar run at the NCAAs (they finished tied for 35th) - by their own standards - still sting. And despite Nicholson's success, he includes himself in that blunt assessment. More
UW-L Wrestling Coach Dave Malecek is a Big Believer in the Benefits of the Daily Grind from LaCrosse Tribune Dave Malecek said it must be the Mountain Dew that keeps his energy level in the red zone.
In reality, Malecek could guzzle warm milk and probably not lose a step when it comes to coaching wrestling. “I could have a terrible day, but when I walk in that (practice) room, I’m a whole new person,” Malecek said. “I love my job, I love going to work, and I want my athletes to feel that way, too.” Such is the sheer enthusiasm driving Malecek as he enters his third season as UW-La Crosse’s head coach.
