Institutional financing is meager and hard work abundant, with dozens of volunteer hours required from the athletes just to put on a single game or match. It’s college athletics without the pageantry or prerogative, and that’s the way athletes in club sports like it. Apprentice & UMBC Place Wrestlers at Spartan Invitational

In a standout field with for nationally-ranked NCAA Division III teams and a pair of NCAA Division I squads, the Apprentice School wrestling team finished tied for fifth out of 10 teams in the York Spartan Invitational on Saturday in York, Pa. Iowa Breaks Attendance Mark, Beats Iowa State

Iowa set the national dual-meet attendance record for wrestling with a crowd of 15,955 and celebrated with a win over Iowa State. Top-ranked Iowa won six of 10 matches and upended No. 2 Iowa State 20-15, the Hawkeyes fourth straight victory over the rival Cyclones. Ryan Morningstar and Alex Tsirtsis beat higher-ranked opponents to lead Iowa (9-0), which extended its winning streak to 23 matches. More
Former NCWA National Champion Rollie Peterkin Wins Vegas Title

Rollie Peterkin climbed to the top of the podium after capturing the championship at 125 pounds at the 2008 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas.
In the final, Peterkin, the top seed in the tournament, defeated sixth-seeded Zach Sanders of Minnesota by decision, 10-6. Peterkin came out on the attack in the first period, shooting for a takedown 45 seconds into the bout for the opening points. He quickly added two nearfall points after tilting Sanders for a 4-0 lead that held at the end of the first period.

Bulgarian Brothers Making a Name at Cal Poly

New sneakers may not be the first thing to come to mind in wrestling, but for Filip Novachkov, it's the story of how he eventually became involved with the sport.
"It wasn't necessarily something I chose," he says. "It's actually a funny story. My (younger) brother Boris started wrestling before me. The reason he joined the wrestling team was because a kid in his class showed up with a pair of brand-new sneakers."
When Boris asked where the kid had gotten the new shoes, his classmate answered that they were given out at wrestling practice. Boris joined immediately, and Filip followed suit a couple months later.

Zach James Gets His Chance at UCO

Central Oklahoma wrestler Zach James always knew opportunity would knock sometime, but the true freshman never guessed it would be this year. The 197-pound James has been pressed into action after the Bronchos lost starter Jarrett Edison to a season-ending ACL tear at the Central Missouri Open on Nov. 16. The loss was a big one. Edison won 29 matches last season and qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament. More
