FDA Announces Collection of Information on Voluntary Cosmetic Registration

The Food and Drug Administration is announcing that a collection of information entitled "Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program" has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget under the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995. The agency previously announced that the proposed information collection had been submitted to OMB for review and clearance and OMB has now approved the information collection and has assigned OMB control number 0910–0030. FDA: Recall of Tainted Pistachio Nuts Far From Over

The recall last week of 2 million pounds of pistachios because of concerns about salmonella contamination has been expanded, and federal officials say more recalls of foods containing pistachios are on the horizon. Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, the California company that is the nation's second-largest processer of pistachios, originally had recalled all of its pistachios harvested since September. The recall was expanded this week to cover Setton's entire 2008 crop, except for raw in-shell pistachios. Most pistachios sold in stores are roasted. More    E-mail article

Nearly one-fifth of American 4-year-olds are obese, and children of color are at higher risk, according to new research. Researchers calculated the body mass index from a sample of 8,550 Hispanic, black, white, Asian and Native American 4-year-olds.
