Sebelius: Focus on Childhood Obesity 'Overdue'

A national focus on childhood obesity is "overdue," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said at a government meeting. She said the administration, including first lady Michelle Obama, plans to take on the health of children. Currently about one-third of kids are overweight or obese, putting them at risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma, depression and a whole host of other health problems.

House to Vote on Food-safety Legislation

The House is expected to vote on legislation that would significantly increase the Food and Drug Administration's funding and authority to police food safety. Democratic leaders will bring up the legislation under a procedure that allows limited debate and no amendments and requires a two-thirds supermajority vote to pass. The bill unanimously passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee in June.

Researcher Richard Kremer of McGill University in Canada, with Dr. Vicente Gilsanz at the University of Southern California, found that in data on California girls. Kremer says girls with normal levels of vitamin D had more height. He says girls with insufficient vitamin D were heavier, especially with belly fat.
