Special-needs Skaters Enjoy Weekly Sessions from the Record-Journal Some were pushed in wheelchairs. Others held on to chairs as they skated. A few braved the ice on their own two feet, grasping the hands of a volunteer. It was adaptive recreational skate at Choate Rosemary Hall's Hemenway Rink in Wallingford, Conn., a dual effort of the school and the Parks and Recreation Department. Area children and adults with special needs and their families enjoyed some time on the ice with the assistance of boys and girls from Choate's ice hockey teams. More
Reclaiming the Outdoors from the Missoulian Somewhere between Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show” and the invention of the home video game, we lost a generation that was comfortable out in the woods. If we don't turn that around we may lose both the kids and the woods. So says speakers at the recent Missoula Children and Nature Summit. Program Helps Young Athletes Excel from the Charlotte Observer The Piedmont Middle School girls' track and field team won its conference championship last season. But members on the team might not have reached their potential without the year-round training and competition that programs like the Charlotte Flights youth track and field team provide. Anthony James, a Mecklenburg County, N.C., Parks and Recreation employee, helped found the youth athletic program 17 years ago. Nearly 350 youths, ages 5-18, participate with the Flights, he said. Sign will be Boon to Community Groups from The Record The City of New Westminster wants to get the word out about happenings in the Royal City. Through its parks and recreation department, the city recently activated a community message center. "The new community message centre is a state-of-the-art message centre that allows us to electronically design, schedule and promote numerous city and community organizations services and opportunities that benefit residents and visitors," said Jason Haight, business manager for the parks and recreation department. California City Named a Tree City USA from the North County Times While businesses come and go in the historic downtown district, one thing remains a constant -- the canopy of trees that invites visitors to a calm drive or leisurely stroll down Main Street in Lake Elsinore, Calif. The corridor is one of numerous spots around town notable for trees, and in recognition of that and efforts to preserve and promote botanical treasures, the city has a new handle: Tree City USA. More
‘Friends’ Ramps up Effort to Help Parks Programs from the Payson Roundup Realtors and an anonymous major donor have so far provided about one-fifth of the money it will take to help Payson, Ariz.’s, hard-pressed recreation programs make it through until next January. Friends of Payson Parks and Recreation h as raised just over $10,000, with several thousand dollars in additional pledges, but needs $47,000. That money would make up for cuts in the Parks and Recreation department’s budget, imposed as a result of lagging revenue projections in December. More
