Florida Playground Designed with Disabled Kids in Mind from the Miami Herald Caitlyn Munson was 9 months old when she died in 2002 of spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disorder that causes muscle weakness. After Caitlyn's death, her mother, Stephanie Munson, became acutely aware of the struggles of those with limited abilities: the man in the wheelchair at the skeet-shooting range, the kids in wheelchairs who couldn't cross the sand in a playground.
