Work on Disc Golf Course Under Way in Bellafontaine, Ohio from The Bellefontaine Examiner When Brad Hooley and Howard Traul III returned to Bellefontaine, Ohio, to visit family, they found themselves having to drive at least to Columbus to take part in one of their favorite pastimes, playing disc golf. The two high school classmates were back in town last weekend. But instead of looking for a course to play on, they were building one for the people of Logan County to enjoy. More

Wayne National Forest helps Challenge Ohio Youth from Black Hills Today The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and many of its recreational partners, including the Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio are challenging the state’s young people to take a break from their computers, televisions and other indoor activities to “Explore the Outdoors” this summer. The challenge is aimed at reuniting children, especially those in elementary school, with the natural world in order to improve their physical and emotional health and make them better environmental stewards in the future. Santa Clara County's Path to Fitness from the Mercury News Park attendance in Santa Clara County, Calif., has been dropping in recent years, and the county Parks and Recreation Department wants to turn the trend around. The "Healthy Trails" campaign is designed to get local residents out of the house and into one of the county's 28 parks. So far, nearly 3,000 county residents have signed up for a "fitness challenge" and agreed to walk, run, hike or bike on at least five of 21 featured trails. More

Lafayette Recreation Department Convinces Over 350 Youths to Turn Off Their TV from The Lafayette Recreation Department Recently, 354 kids aged 6-17 in the surrounding Lafayette, Colo., community did an amazing thing. They said goodbye to Game Boy and sayonara to Sponge Bob. Even more remarkable was the fact that in addition to turning off their electronics, they also rediscovered healthy activities. The Lafayette Recreation Department sponsored a free, engaging program for youth who made a commitment to turn off television and video games and refrain from recreational computer use.
