California School Kids Take Virtual Trips to State Parks from the Sacramento Bee Call it a 21st century field trip. Through a live videoconference last week, students at Kingswood Elementary School in Citrus Heights, Calif., "visited" Crystal Cove State Park on the coast of Orange County. Ranger Jennifer Langer – surrounded by cameras on the rocky shore – taught a lesson on tide-pool ecology over the large screen at the front of Room 13. More
State Park Introduces 'Green' Toilets, Showers from the Grand Haven Tribune To make the showers and toilets more "green" at Grand Haven State Park in Michigan, several economic improvements were made. Water heaters are now on-demand, showers are time controlled and lighting is provided by the sun. Solar power provides electricity when needed, and toilets and urinals are "ultra low-flow." More

Fighting Gang Violence in Greensboro, N.C. from the News-Record Hope Project is a program administered through Greenboro, N.C.'s parks and recreation department that gives teens a way out of gangs. The goal of the program is to give young people an immediate alternative to being in a gang and long-term hope for the future. The organization develops activities and hosts mentoring groups for teens. Mentors teach young people how to predict the consequences of their actions. More
Jackson, Ohio, Park System Now Has 'Friends' from the Canton Repository There is only so much that the township can do for its park system without additional funds. To help, Steve Rohr and other members of an advisory committee for the parks are creating a nonprofit group called "Friends of Jackson Community Parks." Rohr said the organization is sending its application package this week asking to be granted nonprofit status, which will allow it to raise money and apply for grants. More
Texas City Aims to Get Families to Parks from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram A series of free events at parks in Arlington, Texas, this summer aims to get families active and outdoors. Pembroke Pines, Fla., Parks Pass the Test for Water Conservation from the Miami Herald Sweat pours from a team of hardworking irrigation workers from the Pembroke Pines Utilities Department every day to save the city millions of gallons of water every year. About 36 million gallons of water were conserved since 2006 through daily maintenance of irrigation systems at 43 city parks, including 100 acres of athletic fields. More

Students Participate in ‘Go for the Gold’ Fitness Challenge from the Miami Herald The Go for the Gold fitness challenge is part of an effort by the City of Miami Beach, Fla.'s, Parks and Recreation Department to encourage kids to stay fit. Jackie Comptis, a recreation program supervisor and the event coordinator, hopes the programs can keep the kids interested in fitness.
