10 Greenest Places to Retire from U.S. News & World Report
The nation's largest cities spent a record $4.3 billion on their park systems in 2005, according to the latest data available from the Trust for Public Land. U.S. News came up with a list of green retirement destinations drawn from its list of more than 1,000 Best Places to Retire. Each city on the list is generous when it comes to park systems that offer public space. More

Vandy, Metro Parks Launch Obesity Prevention Program for Hispanic Families from the Nashville Business Journal Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation are launching a program to fight obesity and family health at the neighborhood level. Participating families will each receive a free one year membership to the community center, which features a gym, fitness center, indoor swimming pool and other resources. More
'Bio-balls' Get High Marks in Fighting Creek Algae from The Gazette Having tried several unsuccessful solutions to fighting algae in the past, it seems Frederick, Md., has found a reliable ally in the ‘‘bio-ball.” In April, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department employees began submerging eight softball-sized plastic balls every 100 feet along the Carroll Creek Linear Park. Roelkey Myers, the city’s director of parks and recreation, said after two months of use, the initial results show success. More

Fitness Week Hopes to Get Twin City Families Moving from The Pantagraph Staying fit and having fun doing it will be easier than ever this week. Bloomington and Normal parks and recreation departments in Illinois have partnered with The Pantagraph’s Fit Kids initiative to offer Twin Cities Fitness Week — five days of free activities. Fit Kids is a nearly yearlong initiative dedicated to identifying and highlighting commonsense approaches to preventing childhood obesity and developing healthier lifestyles for children and their parents. They've Got a Vision for Baseball in City from The Post-Standard As his entire career up there in The Show lasted for just two games with the Detroit Tigers back in 1971, John Young didn't leave much of an impact in the big leagues. But with a couple of hits in four at-bats, he did take a .500 batting average with him into civilian life. It was Young, after noticing the African-American erosion of the baseball landscape, who conceived of something he dreamily called RBI, "Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities," in southern California back in 1989. And now, with 120,000 participants from coast to coast, the program is beginning in Syracuse, N.Y., in collaboration with the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department. More
Berrien Taps Plan to Fight Kids' Obesity from the South Bend Tribune In Berrien County -- where an estimated 65.2 percent of adults are overweight or obese and the leading cause of death is heart disease -- officials are hoping to address the problem through a program developed by the National Institutes of Health called We Can (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition). The program targets 8- to 13-year-olds and their caregivers. More
Disabilities, Up Close and Personal from the Goldstream News Gazette The Mighty Metchosinites came out on top at the Disability for a Day, Awareness for a Lifetime event hosted by West Shore Parks and Recreation. Seven teams participated in the eye-opening experience. The teams travelled through seven stations with assigned disabilities. When the teams were assigned their disabilities they were intentionally given characteristics of a disability not a title. More
Students Reach Summit of Success from The Record Some local students made it to the top of Canada's highest mountain - without leaving the comforts of home. Students recently used the New West Walks Web site to track their steps. They logged the steps in an effort to "climb" Mount Logan, alongside a two-person team from Summits of Canada. More

Anti-bullying Program Comes to Martin County, Fla. from TCPalm In an effort to curb bullying in elementary schools, the national nonprofit group, A Child Is Missing, is offering an anti-bullying program in Martin County, Fla., for students this summer. Although teaching child safety has been the Fort Lauderdale-based organization's focus for the past four years, a rash of fatal bullying incidents leading to new anti-bullying legislation has given the group a new responsibility.
