Gun Plan for National Parks Gets Extension

A controversial plan that would allow tourists to carry loaded guns in national parks is on hold, as pressure from critics has forced an extension of the public comment period through Aug. 8. Floated first by Congress and later considered by the White House, the plan would remove the current rule stating guns are allowed, but they must be properly stowed. The new proposal would replace the existing policy with a wide range of rules. More
Restoration of Parks Can Yield Big Returns from The Des Moines Register Easter Lake generates roughly $9 million annually for the local economy, Iowa State University research shows. That number is expected to climb to around $13 million a year if certain water-quality benchmarks are achieved through plans to restore the lake.
Restoration at Lake Ahquabi in Warren County produced quick returns on a roughly $4 million investment at the state park, according to figures from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

‘Playground Idol’ a Hit for Iowa City from Quad City Times About 30 children from the Bettendorf, Iowa, Parks and Recreation summer playground program competed in the “Playground Idol” championships. The students, ages 5-12, came from Hoover Park, Riverdale Heights Park, Kiwanis Park, Edgewood Park, Meier Park and Scheck Park. Each park selected three finalists from their own individual “Idol” contests to go on to the finals. More
Camp Lets Kids Swing with Louisville Bats Players from Courier-Journal The Cincinnati Reds' Rookie Success League at Wyandotte Park in Louisville, Ky., has drawn about 400 kids ages 6 to 12. The camp is being put on by the Reds' Community Fund, which introduces at-risk children to baseball. It uses an acronym -- CI REDS -- to emphasize character-building goals: Cooperation, Integrity, Respect, Determination and Spirit. More

Parks Waive Entrance Fees from The Gainesville Sun Family. Friends. Fun. Could it get any better? People didn't have to go far or waste much gas to enjoy all three this past weekend. For the first time Sunday all 161 state parks in Florida waived entrance fees through a campaign called Family. Friends. Fun., created to celebrate Recreation and Parks Month, a designation celebrated every July since 1985. More
