Anna Endreny, a teacher at Ed Smith School in Syracuse, N.Y., is leading a group of about 15 local elementary school teachers in a weeklong summer workshop on using local parks and other green spaces to help teach students about science. The summer institute is a five-day professional development program funded through a two-year, $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. More

Nonprofit Rescues Summer Programs in California City

Alyssa Novoa, 9, loves dancing to R&B music, especially songs by the artist Rihanna. But Alyssa almost didn't get to participate in the Chula Vista Recreation Department's free hip-hop dance class because cuts to the city budget meant the program was about to close. The Friends of Chula Vista Parks and Recreation stepped in, donating $7,100 to keep that class and other summer children's activities going. More

City Looks to Businesses, Service Organizations to Sponsor Parks

The names of Barstow, Calif’s, parks will not change, but under a new plan by the city, local business or service organizations could sponsor area playgrounds and fields. Under a draft agreement passed unanimously by the City Council, a $500 a month sponsorship gets the local business a large sign in the park and the city needed help in maintaining it. It is a growing trend in the parks and recreation industry. More

As Gas Prices Rise, Ohio County Expands Bike-route Network

The Stark County, Ohio, Park District and local officials have been working during the last decade to expand a fledgling network of trails throughout the county that can be used for biking, hiking and riding horses. In a county where bike lanes are virtually nonexistent and fuel costs could breach once unimaginable price levels, these trails could become key thoroughfares for an increasing number of bicyclists. Youth Learn Police Work at Summer Academy

The Greensboro, N.C., Police Department had a group of local high school students seeing double earlier this week in an effort to educate them on the dangers of drinking and driving. Members of the Greensboro Police Department Traffic Division, in conjunction with the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department and the Greensboro Youth Council, hosted the opening session of the Youth Citizen’s Police Academy at the Safety Training Center in Greensboro. Park Moms Keep Watch Over Coral Springs Playgrounds

In Coral Springs, Fla., Park Moms rule the roost. Park Moms is the brainchild of Saundra Tanne, a nurse who is the mother of Michael, 3. On their regular romps to the playground, Tanne checks to make sure the gates are closed, the grounds are free of graffiti and trash, the fences are intact and the play equipment is working properly. There are about two dozen volunteers who patrol city parks on their regular outings and report any problems to City Hall. More

Many playgrounds have a type of poured rubber as a safety feature underneath the equipment. The problem is that dark mat heats up quickly in the sun On a hot July day, just how hot does playground equipment get? KWCH-TV Meteorologist Ross Janssen took a thermometer to the playground to find out. More

A Playground for all Nassau County, N.Y., Children

An Atlantic Beach resident is leading an effort to let all the children play in Nassau County. David Weingarten, executive director of Let All the Children Play, is working with the Nassau County Department of Parks to begin construction on a 2-acre, $2 million universal playground in Eisenhower Park by 2009. The playground would be handicapped-accessible, but intends to be all-inclusive and geared toward all children. More

Parks Workers Keep City Green

Smithville, Kan., is a green city, literally, but that wouldn’t be so if it weren’t for the five men who work at the parks department. Joe Reeves, parks maintenance supervisor, said that the crew maintains the city’s two parks as well as the playground, walking trails and 80-site campground at Smith’s Fork. If the days are too hot or it’s raining, the crew changes its schedule to clean the shop and perform maintenance work on the equipment. When summer changes to winter, crew members put the mowers away and bring out the shovels for the sidewalks. More
