Children's Fitness Event in D.C. Emphasizes the Fun Parts of Fighting Obesity from the Washington Post
Hundreds of children danced, kickboxed and performed other exercises last weekend at Fort Davis Recreation Center in Southeast Washington, D.C., to have some fun and to learn about the dangers of obesity and the benefits of healthful eating and living. The District has the highest childhood obesity rate in the country, according to a study released last year by the Trust for America's Health, a D.C. nonprofit organization. The event, called Recess by the River, offered children ages 8 to 14 and their parents an opportunity to learn about fighting obesity while participating in activities designed to make the lessons enjoyable. Disabled Youths Can Have a Ball in Surprise from The Arizona Republic Surprise, Ariz., had few, if any, recreation programs suited for people with disabilities at the start of 2007. But in March that year, the city opened DreamCatcher Park, a $1.6 million ballpark funded by taxpayers and specifically adapted for disabled people.The opening served as a catalyst for the city's adaptive recreation program, which was created to serve Valley residents with special needs, recreation manager Paul Frie said. 1,000-plus Turn Out for 'Global Day of Play' in Bloomington-Normal from the Pantagraph World Wide Day of Play was started about five years ago by children’s cable television network Nickelodeon, the Bill Clinton Foundation and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Programming, especially cartoons, is suspended part of the day to encourage kids to leave behind the computer and television and play outside. Kevin Smith, recreation supervisor for the Normal, Ill., Parks and Recreation Department, said more than 1,000 kids took part in World Wide Day of Play events in the Twin Cities. More

The two-day event brought together six teams from some of the 11 Major League Baseball teams who sponsor wheelchair softball, including the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. More

Zachary Thompson, from the Dallas County Health Department, is pushing for new legislation to regulate sprayparks, like public pools. Awnings Let Kids Play Safe in Shade from the Miami Herald As part of a city-wide initiative to protect children from harmful sun exposure, the City of Coral Gables, Fla., has installed awnings in the War Memorial Youth Center's playground. ''As skin cancer becomes more prevalent, sun protection becomes more important to parents,'' said Fred Couceyro, the Parks and Recreation director at the Youth Center, adding that parents were ''pretty satisfied'' with the new shade structures. Converted! from the La Canada Valley Sun As they took turns jumping off the black box in the middle of Cornishon Skate Park on their bikes, last Wednesday was a good day for Josh Stroud and Jordan Lawrence. Stroud and Lawrence are the two boys who noticed the lack of BMX parks in the area, went to the city to ask for some time designated for BMX riding at a local skate park. After two months, they got their wish and now Cornishon in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., will feature BMX-only hours. More

Fifteen two-person teams had to travel to five locations throughout the county to complete a series of challenges.
