Unless you’re a part of it, you might not realize that there’s a big boom in kiddie football taking place in Washington, D.C. On any given Saturday this fall, more than 100 teams with about 2,800 kids from ages 5 to 14 are playing organized games within city limits. That's just from one league, run by the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington in conjunction with D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation. "Youth football is bigger than basketball in D.C. now,” says Levae Ford. “It’s even bigger than high school football in the city now. It’s amazing." More

Skatepark Nonprofit Helps Others Get Rolling

The volunteer group that brought a skatepark to Missoula, Mont., is now doing the same for communities around Montana the state. The 15,200-square-foot concrete Mobash Skatepark came to completion through the efforts of the Missoula Skatepark Association, a volunteer organization made up mostly of neophytes who raised funds, negotiated with city and parks officials, and ultimately oversaw construction of the world-class park.The local project taught those organizers a lot; and when they were finished, several of the group's mainstays felt a bit adrift. Cyclists Thankful for City’s Bike Trail Efforts

To help cyclists of all levels, the City of Frisco, Texas, is revising its Hike and Bike Trail master plan. The city is attempting to help serious cyclists and recreational riders navigate through Frisco with the new plan. Experienced riders will be able to use on-street bike routes, while less serious cyclists may use the off-street trail system on wide sidewalks. More

Community Builds 'Taj Mahal' of Playgrounds in North Fayette, Pa.

North Fayette, Pa., children can get ready to climb, crawl, swing, slide and generally jump around on a new, state-of-the-art playground set to open in the spring. About 130 women, men and children, including volunteers from sports organizations, church groups, local companies, and the township parks and recreation board, helped assemble and erect 221 pieces of equipment. Senior citizens served refreshments. "It was great for the community to come out like they did and work as hard as they did and take ownership like they did of the project," parks and recreation Director Bob Brozovich said. More
