 During the Outdoor Adventure Skills Program for Youth with Special Needs, campers with disabilities learn a variety of outdoor skills – what to bring on a hike during the day and night, and how to build a campfire and cook over it. On the final night, they combine all the skills and camp overnight at Oakdale Nature Preserve in Freeport, Ill. Programming is put on by Northlands Association For Special Recreation, a cooperative program for people with special needs between member park districts in Freeport, Rockford and Belvidere. More

The highest award in the field of parks and recreation, the Gold Medal honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, fiscal resource management, citizen support systems, environmental stewardship, preservation, technological integration, program planning and assessment, professional development, agency recognition and services for special population.

California City's Task Force Formation to Boost Ecotourism

A task force to help the city of Palm Springs, Calif., inventory its nature-based travel and tourism opportunities was announced last week The Ecotourism Task Force is the second task force created by Mayor Steve Pougnet in the last couple of weeks as part of the city's 20 steps toward sustainability. Illinois City Struggles to Find Recreation Funds for Special-needs Residents

Lori McAleavy loves to watch her 12-year-old son, Scott, round the bases during his softball games. Scott, who is autistic, plays in a softball league at the Tri-County Special Recreation Association, a Romeoville-based agency with sports clubs, summer camps and other events for people with disabilities. McAleavy has been signing up Scott for programs since he was 7, and she says the staff has helped her son become more independent. But Homer Township, Ill., residents like McAleavy recently got a case of sticker shock after discovering they soon would be shelling out much more. More
Temple City's 'Homework Help' Enters Second Year

Temple City, Calif., recently launch its second year of free Homework Help for grades first through sixth. Around 15 volunteers from local high schools and colleges helped around 20 students with their academics. The program provides a close one-on-one study session with partnered volunteers and students. Students are matched with the volunteer instructor each week to help build a good working relationship. More
