from The Associated Press via FOX News
Their budgets in crisis, governors, legislators and prison officials across the nation are making or considering policy changes that will likely remove tens of thousands of offenders from prisons and parole supervision. Collectively, the pending and proposed initiatives could add up to one of biggest shifts ever in corrections policy, putting into place cost-saving reforms that have struggled to win political support in the tough-on-crime climate of recent decades. New Texas Sheriff Says He Wants More Deputies
from the Houston Chronicle
Harris County, Texas, needs more "boots on the ground" to arrest criminals, prevent crime and help residents of its far-flung neighborhoods feel safer, newly instated Sheriff Adrian Garcia said Sunday. In an inaugural address to hundreds of supporters, Garcia said he would ask county commissioners to pay for additional academy classes while he took steps internally to free up more deputies for patrol duties. About 800 deputies now patrol an area that would be the seventh-largest U.S. city, Garcia said. More

Allen County, Ind., Sheriff's Department Gets Donation of Night-vision Goggles
from the News-Sentinel
Criminals hiding in the dark, beware – sheriff deputies can see you. ITT Corp. donated 20 night-vision goggles to the Allen County, Ind., Sheriff's Department and Fort Wayne, Ind., Police Department on Monday. The departments will split the donation with each receiving 10 units for training and nighttime operations. The goggles allow a viewer to see a green tint in pitch black darkness that illuminates everything within the view finder, but gives off no light, making the user nearly indetectable. They can be mounted to firearms or helmets, or simply used by hand. More

Community Policing in California City Bears Fruit
from the San Francisco Chronicle
In Richmond, Calif., a city that has traditionally struggled with poverty and high crime rates, a community policing plan implemented 2 1/2 years ago is beginning to take hold in some of the city's most troubled neighborhoods. It has come down to a two front war: a high-tech battle to quickly target and address crime problems in a specific area, and a more important tug-of-war for the hearts and minds of the residents who live there. Cell Phones Aid in Solving Crime
from the Augusta Chronicle
When you think of the many uses of a cell phone, tracking likely isn't one of them. But it is. Law enforcement officials say the cell phone has become much like a digital fingerprint, providing records of where someone has been and to whom the person has talked, often aiding in the prosecution of a crime. from The Associated Press via CBS News
An estimated 3.4 million Americans identified themselves as victims of stalking during a one-year span, according to federal crime experts who on Tuesday released the largest-ever survey of the aggravating and often terrifying phenomenon. About half of the victims experienced at least one unwanted contact per week from a stalker, and 11 percent had been stalked for five or more years, according to the report by the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics. Assisting Law Enforcement in Battling Cybercrime
from MarketWatch
With computer crimes ranging from fraud, child pornography and even terrorism ever on the rise, it is essential to the effectiveness of law enforcement that computer forensics technology keeps pace with computer technology. To compound this problem, computer forensic labs are continuously backlogged, and law enforcement agencies increasingly are forced to rely on in-house investigations to address the immediacy of computer-related crimes. Voom Technologies, a leader in computer forensics technology development, addresses both of these concerns with the just-released HardCopy 3 (HC3), a faster, upgraded and enriched version of their renowned HardCopy 2 computer forensics hard-drive duplicator.
