Police to Pay More for Booking Some Inmates at California Jail

Police departments soon will be paying more to book some people charged with misdemeanor crimes into the San Mateo County, Calif., jail. The sheriff's office currently charges "jail access fees" to police departments that book an excessive number of misdemeanor suspects, a policy that Sheriff Greg Munks said is intended in part to keep the county jail from becoming any more overcrowded. Chairman Arlen Specter lead the hearing which assembled a wide ranging panel. Despite the different political leanings of the panel members, they all agreed that the criminal justice system requires a comprehensive review.

U.S. and Mexico Agree to Improve Customs Processes and Secure Travel and Trade

The U.S. and Mexico formalized an agreement Monday to work together to secure legal travel and trade across the countries' shared border. The agreement is outlined in a letter of intent signed by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Mexico's Finance Minister Agustin Carstens. It expands a 2007 agreement and formalizes plans announced earlier this year to search vehicles at border crossings for bulk weapons and cash being smuggled from the U.S. into Mexico where more than 10,800 people have been killed by drug violence since December 2006.
