MADD Volunteers Support Local Sheriff with New Program to Report Drunk Driving

Volunteers for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in Manatee County, Fla., are about to launch a first-in-the-nation pilot program in cooperation with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. Volunteers will participate in a "Traffic Observation Program" (TOP) for 6 months beginning on Sept. 1. MADD Traffic Observers will provide vehicle descriptions, direction of travel and license plate numbers of drivers who show signs of driving drunk to the local Sheriff's office. More

Guns at Church, College Next on Georgia Lawmakers' Agenda

State lawmakers are looking into making it legal for people with firearms-carry licenses to take their guns into even more places in Georgia. The move comes on the heels of House Bill 89, which became law on July 1 and lets people with firearms licenses to carry guns into state parks, restaurants that serve alcohol and on mass transit. Lawmakers could next push legislation allowing license holders to take their guns to church, or even onto college campuses. More

The DARE Debate

A program aimed at keeping kids off drugs became a topic of conversation earlier this summer when the state of New York announced it would no longer help fund it. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, known as DARE, has been a mainstay in Ontario County, N.Y., schools since 1991. Some 20,000 kids have taken part in the program in the county's nine school districts outside the two cities, with thousands more having been through the program in the city school districts in Geneva and Canandaigua. The state's withdrawal of funding won't put an end to the program here, at least in the near future, based on what those involved with it have to say. More

Sheriff Lists Seven Ways to Keep Kids Safe

The clock is quickly winding down on another summer break filled with family vacations, trips to the beach and lots of sleeping in. the Collier County, Fla., Sheriff’s Office launched its annual “Seven Ways in Seven Days” campaign, a week-long effort to remind residents that school is starting, and to offer school safety tips to students and their parents. The Sheriff’s Office put up countdown banners at six sites in the county. More

Anti-graffiti Program Hailed as Success

A California county has scribbled out a message of victory over the face of vandalism. The proposed new ordinance, to be voted on next week, would enable the county to declare itself "a victim" and recover the costs of graffiti abatement and place liens for unpaid costs against the property of the graffiti offender or their parent or guardian. The six-month pilot project incorporates the "Graffiti Tracker" system and utilizes a sheriff's sergeant and four deputies with monetary support from the city of Pico Rivera, Calif. More

Massachusetts City Stages Night Out Against Crime

The arrest was a demonstration staged by Westfield, Mass., police for "National Night Out: America's Night Out Against Crime." The event not only showcased the Westfield Police Department and its various units, but included Southwick police, the Hampden County Sheriff's Office, and community organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and the local Elks Lodge.
