U.S. Stimulus Bill Provides for “Green” Vehicles from CanadianDriver
The $787 billion U.S. stimulus bill provides funds for a large range of transportation-related projects, including significant changes to the plug-in vehicle tax credit program, according to the Green Car Congress. The bill, HR 1 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, and was signed by President Barack Obama.

GM, Chrysler Push for More U.S. Aid from Bloomberg General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, already relying on government aid to survive, take their case to the U.S. Treasury that they can undo past mistakes and justify more U.S. aid to return to profit. GM, with a pledge for $13.4 billion in loans, may seek support beyond an $18 billion request made Dec. 2 because of worsening economic conditions, people familiar with the automaker’s plan said. Chrysler has said it needs at least $3 billion in addition to $4 billion it received last month.

Steel Market Prices Surprise Some Analysts and Decline for Sixth Month from Purchasing Data A market basket of carbon steel products dropped an average 10 percent in price this month but even lower-priced mill products failed to trigger an advance in purchasing. Only 15 percent of the buyers polled were increasing steel purchases in January and most of those actually writing purchase orders were distribution industry personnel filling inventory holes. Buyers polled this month see slippage, which began last August, to continue through March before bottoming.

Nissan and Chrysler Reconsider Product Swap
from International Herald Tribune Nissan Motor and Chrysler have halted work on a product-swap program to consider ways of improving its projected financial returns. Under their agreement, which was announced 10 months ago, Nissan was to have supplied Chrysler with an all-new, fuel-efficient small car made in Japan in exchange for a full-size pickup truck made by Chrysler in Mexico.

Ford's Electric Strategy Gets Michigan Tax Help from The Detroit News Ford Motor Co. says it has received a $55 million tax incentive from Michigan to continue work in advanced battery and electric vehicle development.
Ford said Tuesday the refundable tax credit comes through the new Michigan Advanced Battery Credits initiative.
