Ford Beats Expectations with $2.3 Billion Quarterly Profit

Ford Motor Co. said today it earned a profit of $2.3 billion during the three months ending June 30, far surpassing Wall Street’s expectations, but said its performance was boosted by one-time gains from successful debt restructuring actions. More

Marchionne Says Fiat, Chrysler Are Rapidly Sharing Technology

In the six weeks since Fiat SpA and Chrysler Group LLC concluded their alliance, the new partners have moved quickly to integrate their automotive operations. Fiat has delivered underpinnings for a minicar to Chrysler, which will in turn provide mid- and full-size car platforms to the Italian carmaker, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of both Fiat and the new Chrysler Group, said. Truck Sales Edge Up

Sales of commercial trucks edged up slightly midway through 2009, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications. Truck dealers sold 25,128 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds in June, up 5 percent from May. More

Ford Motor Co. says the U.S. car market has bottomed out, but warned that the recovery could still be months away. Ford Americas President Mark Fields said leading economic indicators suggest the economy will recover in the second half of the year, but he said it is unclear how long it will take for that trend to buoy car and truck sales. House OKs $150 Million Natural-gas Car Program

The House overwhelmingly approved a $150 million program to research natural-gas powered vehicles. By a vote of 393-35, the House passed the bill that authorizes the Energy Department to conduct a five-year program of natural gas vehicle research, development and demonstration, authorizing $30 million annually starting in the 2010 budget year. More

High-tech Highway Funding

With funding set to expire this fall, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee proposes to authorize a half trillion dollars in federal spending on surface transportation over six years. The Obama administration took a different view, announcing that it wanted Congress to delay reauthorization for 18 months. More

FedEx Expands Hybrid Fleet

FedEx Corp. said it has added 92 hybrid-electric trucks to its delivery fleet, the first standard FedEx delivery trucks converted to hybrid-electric systems. The addition of the 92 trucks to FedEx’s hybrid-electric fleet boosted the level by more than 50 percent, to 264 from 172. More
