Retailers Plan Strategies, Embrace Layaway from The Pasadena Star-News Tightened credit markets, layoffs and a meltdown in the nation's housing and financial sectors have created a lot of uncertainty for consumers. But one thing's clearly certain - this holiday shopping season is not going to be pretty for retailers. A new report by Deloitte & Touche offers a grim prediction of what's to come. With the economy weighing heavily on their minds, many Americans are planning to spend less and shop differently, according to DeLoitte's 23rd annual Holiday Survey of retail spending and trends. Fifty-three percent of consumers who were surveyed expect the economy to weaken next year, up from 43 percent last year. "Retailers are grabbing onto the rails and holding on for dear life," said Richard Giss, an equity analyst with DeLoitte. "And you're seeing more and more of them turn to something that used to be a staple but hasn't been used in years - the layaway." More

Shifting Into Cost Cutting Mode from Business Week Many small business owners may soon find themselves in a difficult situation, with rising costs and stagnant sales in a sour economy. Recent surveys of economic trends by the National Federation of Independent Business found weak levels of capital spending over the past six months. And in its latest survey, conducted in September, just 21 percent of respondents expected to make capital purchases in the next few months. The survey also found businesses reducing inventories, with a net 12 percent cutting stock rather than adding. Still, by recognizing the problem early and making moderate reductions, small firms can avoid more severe cuts later on, financial experts say. Companies that ignore warning signs can erode their profits with rising costs, and those that borrow to meet those costs can wind up insolvent. More

How Retailers Can Make the Best of a Slowdown from Forbes Downturns are tough on retailers. Recent McKinsey research indicates that during the last two recessions (1990 to 1991 and 2000 to 2001), growth slowed for nearly every retail sub-sector in the U.S. Ninety-three percent of the retailers surveyed that existed during both downturns experienced slowing revenue growth in one of them, and 59 percent endured it in both. These downturn dynamics--declining sales followed by a sluggish recovery period--mean retailers should move quickly to minimize performance deterioration. The challenge, of course, is that retailers have a large number of options to sort through, ranging from cutting costs by shutting stores or restructuring support functions, to increasing revenue by refreshing stores or overhauling promotions.
