Solar Cells Integrated with Building Materials from Technology Review
In an effort to promote the adoption of solar technology, United Solar Ovonic of Auburn Hills, Mich, has teamed with a major roofing company to create a metal roof system that generates electricity from sunlight. The partnership offers seven different prefabricated systems, ranging in capacity from 3 to 120 kilowatts. Tests show that the solar roof panels are rugged and can withstand winds in excess of 160 miles per hour. More
Abercrombie Refuses to Discount, Stock Plunges from The New York Times Magazine Eight years ago, Abercrombie & Fitch was the bee's knees of discreetly sexy casualwear. Overpriced sandblasted jeans and button-up plaid shirts were boxed up and put under the tree (or menorah) of any 16-year-old with a Suburban in the driveway. Those were the good, pre-recession, naked-models-riding-horses-in-catalogues days. But now Abercrombie is suffering much worse than its competitors, like American Eagle, in the economic downturn. Though the competition is discounting prices to get consumers to shop, Abercrombie has kept its prices the same because they don't want to look cheap. More
Dominick's Owner Going Bargain Shopping for Real Estate from The Chicago Sun-Times Safeway, owner of Dominick's grocery stores, has created a real estate development business that has reviewed 36 projects for possible development and is working actively on a handful of the projects, a spokesman confirmed. One example of a project would be Safeway developing a shopping center where it operates a grocery store, and leasing or selling the retail space surrounding its store. Safeway would retain ownership of its grocery store in that center. More

Kohl’s Celebrates 1,000th Store Milestone from Business Wire Kohl’s Department Stores celebrated the opening of its 1,000th store in October, marking an important milestone in company history. The accomplishment is part of a 47-store expansion this fall which includes 45 stores that are built according to a design that is LEED pre-certified at the Silver level from the U.S. Green Building Council. Job cuts slated for Office Depot, Yahoo, EA from CNN Money Office Depot, Yahoo and Electronic Arts have added to the mounting job losses in the global economy, with more than 4,000 positions slated for elimination. Office Depot recently unveiled its plan to cut 2,200 jobs. The retailer, based in Boca Raton, Fla., also said it would close 112 retail stories and six distribution facilities. More
Black Friday Gets Holiday Season Off to Energetic Start from The Washington Post Consumers swarmed the nation's stores over the Black Friday weekend in search of deeply discounted electronics and apparel, sending sales rising and giving retailers a little Christmas cheer, according to reports. Market research firm ShopperTrak reported that sales on Black Friday grew 3 percent to about $10.6 billion. Last year, sales on that day grew 8.3 percent. More

Staples Will Open LEED-Registered Store in Boston from The Boston Globe Office supply retailer Staples Inc. announced in September the opening of its first LEED-registered store in the Northeast. According to Framingham-based Staples is one of the first stores in Boston to be registered with the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, program. More
AT&T, Constellation Wines, Gap to Each Host 1- to 1.2-MW Solar Power Systems from Green Biz Gap Inc. has unveiled a 1-megawatt solar power system, and Constellation Wines U.S. and AT&T are each working with strategic partnerships of their own to host comparably large systems that will harness the power of the sun. In Fresno, Gap Inc., MMA Renewable Ventures, which is a subsidiary of Municipal Mortgage & Equity LLC, and SunPower Corporation teamed up to create a 1-megawatt solar power system at the campus for Gap's West Coast distribution center.
