All "stressed out" and no place to go
Arlene Alpert
Share

Are you among those who are experiencing a "stress epidemic" that has at its roots the financial crises? It is a common theme that when people lose something valuable, whether it is their job, home, lifestyle, the reaction is loss and grief. However, loss and grief do not cause stress; it is when the loss feels unbearable and the grief
becomes unmanageable, that stress is a result.
What is significant is that the experience of stress is not universal. In other words, one person's circumstance can lead to a total stress breakdown while another considers a part of everyday living. Research has shown that "stressors" are endless, but there are particular basic events that are a common cause and "stress people out" today: job, finances, over-commitment, health problems, relationship issues, major changes, like moving and
divorce, and even positive changes can be stressful: a new baby, getting married, going off to college.
Actually, it is feelings that cause stress. The emotions of stress, like fear, hopelessness, helplessness and a lack of control can make life seem intolerable. Yet, these very emotions can be the antidote to stress when you understand that every emotion is attached to a basic need, so that when the need is identified, stress decrease. Five basic needs have been identified that are human
experiences. You can identify any (or all) that are not being satisfied enough to relieve stress. Some are:
1) Physical Needs: Sleep, Relaxation, Good Nutrition, Water, Exercise, Oxygen Intake through Deep Diaphragmatic Breathing and Laughter
2) Emotional & Self-Esteem Needs: Although these needs weren't met in childhood, and that was one cause of stress, maturity brings the responsibility for each of us to meet these needs. We need to accept ourselves, to respect
ourselves. A major cause of stress is not feeling of value, not having inner strength, competence, self-confidence.
3) Social Needs: A supportive community of family, friends, and other social connections are a vital backbone for handling stress. When we experience the support of our social groups, we can better handle the stresses of life. We need to feel respected, loved for ourselves and a sense of belonging.
4) Mental Needs: Even if we have lost our job, we still
need to feel useful. It may feel like a poor substitute, yet without using our brains, our capabilities, our capacity to think, our aptitude to problem-solve, feeding our creative minds, we will quickly fall into a stressful state and possible depression.
5) Spiritual Needs: A belief in a power higher than ourselves can greatly minimize stress. Outlets, such as Prayer, Meditation, Journaling, Yoga, Tai Chi, a Retreat, creating a dependable place in a natural environment, these can
create a feeling of safety and security and counteract the ravages of stress.
So, when you feel all stressed out, you have all these places to go that will help you to take care of yourself and manage your stress.

When plastic surgery calls for a do-over
The New York Times

No face-lift stops time, so as aging continues, even a satisfied
patient may choose to have another one a decade later. But what if your face-lift never pleased you, not because of complications or monstrous scars, but because of aesthetics pure and simple? Perhaps your first surgeon’s technique resulted not only in a tighter jaw line, but also a flat wind-swept cheek and a stretched mouth. Or your nose no longer has an unsightly bump, but now, postsurgery, is asymmetrical.

A Prep Class is an interactive study group that allows the candidate to further their knowledge development. Its an excellent way to "brush-up" on skills,
develop a nurturing mentor relationship with their instructor, and provides more interaction than if the candidate only used the self-study method. Utilizing the training manual format, the instructor will review study objectives and knowledge reviews, provide interactive verbal quizzes, and conclude the class with a sample written test. This sample test provides the candidate with an overview of how a test question will appear on the examination.
