Texas to Reconsider $6 Million Steroid Testing in Schools
from Yahoo! News
By the tens of thousands, Texas student-athletes have been pulled out of class to urinate in a cup for the nation's largest high school steroids testing program. Boys and girls in all sports, from football to tennis to cross country, have been randomly selected. The results so far have found little to confirm fears that steroid use is a rampant problem. When the first 10,000 tests found only four positive results, critics declared the two-year program a waste of time and money. Now state lawmakers must decide whether to keep the $6 million program chugging along, scale it down or eliminate it. More

A Look at which has Better High School Football, Texas or Florida?
from Orlando Sentinel
It is debated by analysts and high school football fans everywhere: Which state has better high school football, Texas or Florida? Floridians could argue that high school success is judged by national titles. Fueled by state recruits, Florida's universities have won nine since 1983. Texans could cite their 10 nationally ranked high school teams this season as a deciding factor. More

Chancellors Bring Intensity to Sidelines
from Houston Chronicle
You won’t catch Van Chancellor or his son John sitting much when they coach basketball. In 2004, when Van was coach of the Comets, John was coaching the Houston Stealth, a National Women’s Basketball League team that played during the WNBA offseason. John drew up the plays and ran the practices and his righthand man was his assistant coach, Van. During a game in Houston, John stood to call out to a player. He saw out of the corner of his eye that Van, too, was on his feet hollering at a player. A referee came by and told John that one of the coaches needed to sit. “The ref told me, ‘Can you tell him to sit down?’ I don’t want to tell Van Chancellor to sit down,” John said. “I don’t think Dad liked having to stay seated during the game. It was quite a role reversal.” But that is what you can expect from the Chancellors. Van, 65, now women’s coach at LSU, is on his feet during every game; at Barbers Hill High School, John coaches every possession. More

Southwest’s Junior Forward is a "Rebounding Monster"
from Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Fort Worth Southwest coach Susan Croft calls her a "rebounding monster." And there’s a reason why junior forward Briesha Wynn has that title. Wynn has an ability to read how every shot will bounce off the backboard or rim. “I don’t know how she does it, but Briesha just knows where to be," Croft said. "It’s an amazing ability." With those natural instincts, the 5-foot-10 Wynn has carried the Lady Raiders (14-6, 6-1 District 7-4A), averaging 15 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocks a game. More

Soccer: Churchill Chargers Open with High Expectations
from San Antonio Express-News
Churchill coach Steve Zimmerman says he often talks to his players about the program's rich history. Before games and during workouts, the Chargers' four Class 5A state championships and eight regional titles are an at-the-ready source of inspiration — and a reminder of the program's expectations. That was the topic a month ago when Zimmerman addressed his team, which graduated 11 players off a team that lost to Klein in a shootout in the state semifinals. More

Reicher Standout Named TAPPS Player of the Year
from Waco Tribune
Reicher senior Ross Rasner willingly gave everything he had during the Cougars’ run to the TAPPS Division III state championship this fall. Rasner finished the season with 1,426 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, 117 tackles and two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns. More

Got Game, Duncanville Will Travel
from The Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
American Airlines Flight 482, loaded with the tallest athletes at Duncanville, touched down near the tallest buildings in Indianapolis. It was two days after Christmas, and the biggest name in Dallas-area basketball had arrived at another big-time event. Well, almost. There was still a 90-minute bus ride to Muncie, Ind., where most of the buildings weren't much taller than Duncanville's 6-10 center, Perry Jones. More

Reagan's Dawning of the Age of JaQuarius
from Austin American-Statesman
The memory of Reagan's athletic glory, much like the lettering on the school's brick exterior that commemorates it, is fading. The days of routine playoff runs and district titles on the East Side are gone. The football team has won eight games in the past five seasons, while the boys’ basketball team has missed the playoffs in four of the past five years. But keep an eye on JaQuarius Daniels, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound sophomore who may be the key to restoring the luster of the Reagan athletic program. More
