Bill Proposes to Move State Basketball Tourneys Away from Austin
from Austin American-Statesman Cathy Self-Morgan has attended the state high school basketball tournament in Austin as a fan, a player and a coach for 43 years — a tradition she does not plan to break anytime soon. "The tradition of state basketball is in Austin, and at the Drum," said Self-Morgan, the head coach of tradition-rich Duncanville. "As players, your goal is always to get to Austin. It was the same when we were players." But while the city has been the mecca of high school basketball in Texas since 1921, the cry of "Austin or Bust" might be silenced if Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, is successful in getting the state tournament moved out of town. More
Togetherness Leading Newman Smith to New Heights
from The Dallas Morning News A Saturday morning practice paints the picture of the boys basketball team's close relationship at Carrollton Newman Smith. Players cheer each other on during pre-practice sessions in the weight room. Players high-five as they finish dribbling and shooting drills. And if a turnover or error is made, there isn't a lot of finger-pointing.
"We're a family," senior guard Blaken Zamudio said, "and we're doing all we can to get better." Newman Smith has parlayed its positive attitude and blue-collar mentality into state recognition. The Trojans (20-2, 4-0 in District 10-4A) are No. 1 in SportsDay's Class 4A area rankings and No. 2 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches/TexPreps Basketball magazine 4A state poll.

Madison Football Coach Seals Worthy of His Award
from Houston Chronicle In 44 years of coaching, Ray Seals has seen it all. Segregation. Integration. Good teams, bad teams. Players who have gone on to great college and NFL careers, and players who have needed help just to stay on the football field. As Madison’s football coach, Seals seems to have learned more about life than anything else — and he has used football as a platform from which to teach life’s lessons. His players work hard for him, his former players admire him and, in a way, he’s a father figure to them.

Steroids Tests Advocate Disagrees with Perry
from The Dallas Morning News Gov. Rick Perry said last week that steroids don't appear to be a serious problem among Texas teens, citing the low number of positive results so far in the state's high school testing program. Perry suggested that the program could possibly be scaled back.
