The determined Rivera High School junior doesn't shy away from challenges. Instead, he readily accepts them. Already a national-level competitor in chess as a middle-school student, Santoyo decided it was time to learn to swim last summer, and that endeavor led him to join the Rivera swimming team.

Cy Falls Hoops Coach Taught Game in Middle East
from Houston Chronicle On his first night in the holy city of Bethlehem, Jim Stephens took his 12-year-old son Kyle to watch the local club basketball team, which he soon would be coaching.
During the game, a fight broke out in the stands, and before Stephens knew it a group of soldiers was at midcourt firing machine guns into the air. Stephens grabbed his son and backed away as bullets showered to the ground. “That was my introduction to Middle Eastern basketball,” Stephens said.

Chaps' Long Announces He's Leaving
from Austin American-Statesman Derek Long, who led Westlake to 54 wins and one state championship game in six seasons, has stepped down as the school's head football coach and athletic director. Long just finished his 26th season at Westlake. He became the Chaparrals' defensive coordinator in 1992 and succeeded Ron Schroeder as head coach in 2003. The news of his retirement surprised both his players and coaches of Westlake opponents.
