The University Interscholastic League released the latest results from random tests on male and female athletes in Texas from September through December. All seven athletes who tested positive were male. More

Being a Coach’s Kid has Perks, but it can be a Balancing Act for All
from Fort Worth Star-Telegram
It’s not always easy being the coach’s kid. Sure, it comes with its perks — unlimited access to the gym or ballpark being one. Finding a ball, or 20, shouldn’t be a problem either. By that token, though: When, if ever, does practice stop? When does the parent-child relationship kick in? Why are their own teammates questioning their place on the team? A look at a few area parent-child, coach-athlete duos. A coach-child relationship can be stressful at times, but the time together can create a bond of a lifetime. Here’s what some who know have to say. More

Retirement Leaves South Garland Coach Feeling ‘Empty’
from Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
After 42 years as a teacher and basketball coach, Garland Nichols has earned a rest. But the retiring South Garland coach isn't sure he wants it. Most years, the 62-year-old would be looking forward to the playoffs. But as many teams start the postseason tonight, South Garland is missing the playoffs for only the fifth time in Nichols' 21 seasons. He coached his last game a week ago, when South Garland lost to Garland to drop to fifth place in District 10-5A. It's not the way he wanted to go out. But after battling kidney stones in recent years and other nagging health issues, Nichols decided it was time. More

New Braunfels Pole Vaulter Payne has Olympic Potential
from San Antonio Express-News
Not prone to hyperbole, private pole vault tutor Glen Dickson needed only one workout with New Braunfels sophomore Demi Payne to break his inclination for understatement. Go home, he told her, and write 2012 on your mirror. Puzzled, Payne asked why. “I said, ‘That's when the Olympic trials are, and that should be your goal,'” Dickson said. “That was way, way out of character for me. I've had a lot of kids I thought could be good. But I've never told anybody something like that.” Then again, he's never had a pupil with this much potential. More
