Duncanville Boys Basketball Coach McNeely Retires
from Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
After 31 years of coaching, Duncanville boys basketball coach Phil McNeely has decided to hang up the whistle. Last week, McNeely told his players that he will retire after 27 seasons at Duncanville, the last 25 of those as the team's head coach. McNeely posted a 702-174 record. He earned his 700th victory in an area-round playoff game against Flower Mound Marcus on Feb. 27. McNeely led Duncanville to UIL 5A state championships in 1991, 1999 and 2007. The 2007 team, in addition, earned a mythical national championship from HoopsUSA.com after a 39-0 season. More

Northbrook Raiders Turning Baseball Program Around
from Houston Chronicle
There’s nothing like playing from behind, even before you start playing. That’s the position Northbrook baseball finds itself in as it began the District 18-5A season March 17 against rival Spring Woods. Last year the Raiders (1-8, 0-4) turned in an 0-14 performance in the district in which only three of those games were not run-ruled. The team was beset by internal issues that upended its chemistry and basically didn’t have the talent to compete with either the Spring Branch schools or the Aldine schools. But a new district brings a new beginning, at least in first-year coach John McCracken’s mind. After witnessing the debacle last year as an assistant coach, which included just one win, McCracken still wanted to take over the reins of the program. More

S.B.O.E. Takes the First Step to Equalize Graduation Credits for Athletics
from THSCA
On Thursday, March 26th, 2009 the State Board of Education passed out of committee "Option 2" of the 5 Options that were presented by the T.E.A. Staff for consideration of increasing allowable graduation credits for athletics. "Option 2" would expand the number of allowable state physical education credits to four. Below is the "Implementation Timeline" suggested by the T.E.A. Staff to put into effect this option.

This is a "BIG STEP" in our efforts to put athletics on equal footing with regard to state credits for electives, but there is still a lot of work to be done as we begin this implementation process for "Option 2." More

Gregory-Portland Soccer: Force Meets Finesse
from Corpus Christi Caller-Times
The Gregory-Portland boys soccer team has been a Coastal Bend power for a while now. The five district championship trophies are a testament to that. However, the newest version of Wildcats soccer has something those other squads were missing: a little brute physicality. More

Del Valle Football Coach Mayfield Leaving for 2A Comfort
from Austin American-Statesman
Del Valle football coach Chip Mayfield has accepted the head coaching and athletic director's position with Comfort High School. Mayfield, 34, went 16-24 in four seasons at Del Valle. None of his teams made the playoffs, but the Cardinals went 6-4 in 2006, only the school's third winning season in the past 25 years. He was selected from a field of 58 candidates for the Comfort job. He'll be the Bobcats' third coach in the past three seasons. More

Love of Game Motivates Shortstop
from Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Phillip Gonzales sits in the dugout on this particular day preparing for practice with his Richland baseball teammates and exuding confidence and self-assurance. And why not? He can play a little. Actually, he can play a lot. The senior shortstop and leadoff hitter enters today’s 4 p.m. road game with Abilene High School hitting .442 with nine extra-base hits, 14 stolen bases and 16 runs scored and hoping to help improve the Rebels’ 2-2 District 3-5A record and playoff ambitions. And he’s certain the Rebels’ best days are ahead. More

Above the Bar
from Kerrville Daily Times
Before each vault he makes, Cedric Bohnert thinks just one thing — land on the mat. With a nearly 1-inch thick steel rod holding his chest cavity in place, the 18-year-old Comfort pole vaulter is reaching new heights, literally, after undergoing a procedure two years ago to correct a condition known as “pectus excavatum.” More

Reagan Gets Past O'Connor, Heads Back to Regionals
from San Antonio Express News
The Reagan girls soccer team could've easily lamented that its high-powered offense hasn't produced recently like it did for most of the season. The Rattlers could also have pointed out the overwhelming pressure hovering over them — the No. 2 national ranking, the unbeaten record, and the tag as the team to beat in Region IV-5A. But the Rattlers know that no one is going to feel any pity for them. Instead, the Reagan just continued to do what it does best — win. More

Rapid Rise for Plano East High Jumper
from Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
Toddrick Allen cleared a personal-best 7 feet in the high jump March 21 at the Texas Southern University Relays. Quite a feat for someone still relatively new to the event. "I used to play around with [high jumping] in the eighth or ninth grade," said Allen, a Plano East senior who said he first jumped competitively two years ago. "I was getting 5-9 or so then." Allen, the reigning 5A state champion, entered the 45th Jesuit-Sheaner Relays as the only jumper who has cleared 7-0 in a meet this season. More
