Two Coaching Traditions Produce Baseball Winners at Southwest and Birdville
from Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Colorado Rockies outfielder Brad Hawpe remembers his high school baseball days in Fort Worth under "a hard-nosed baseball coach." Pittsburgh Pirates second base prospect Shelby Ford fondly recalls playing for a coach "that wanted his players to play the game right." The coaches Hawpe and Ford are describing, Birdville’s David Hatcher and Fort Worth Southwest’s Mike Thompson, have a great passion of teaching the game of baseball — and a great success rate at it. Both coaches, who are good friends, could also reach the 400-win milestone within 10 days of each other. More

High School Pole Vault Record Falls
from Austin American-Statesman
Last Thursday, Texas Relays organizers were forced to push back a pole vault competition because of blustery winds that were considered a danger to the athletes. The following day, the winds were still snapping the flags near the vaulting pit, but it was vaulting records — not the competitors — that were suddenly in jeopardy. As fans clapped in unison and then cheered in awe and delight, Jack Whitt of Norman (Okla.) North obliterated the 11-year-old high school meet record of 17 feet, 2 inches by soaring 18 feet and one-quarter inch on his third and final vault at that height. More

Private Schools Petition the State Legislature for Admittance to the U.I.L.
from THSCA
S.B. 1831, by Dan Patrick of Houston and H.B. 1829, by Frank Corte of San Antonio, are companion bills relating to participation of private schools in U.I.L. sponsored activities. If passed the language in these bills would destroy a level playing field for our public schools and the children they serve. This would affect athletics, academics, music and fine arts in all classifications. More
