Texas Prep Track Star Wins Second Team Title Alone

The best small high school track team in Texas is once again a freckle-faced girl named Bonnie Richardson. Valedictorian of her 14-student senior class in the tiny farming town of Rochelle, Richardson won the Class A girls team state title by herself for the second consecutive year Saturday by single-handedly beating 56 other schools. As New Braunfels Canyon's celebration of a state championship got under way Saturday, three Smithson Valley players could be seen peering from just beyond Canyon's dugout to catch a glimpse of the scene. Whitney Pole Vaulter Shows Off at State, Breaks Meet Record

Whitney sophomore Wren Bonner experienced moments of frustration this season when she considered walking away from the pole vault. This past Saturday, she walked off the track at the UIL state meet as the gold medalist and new record holder in Class 3A. Bonner left the competition behind in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet to win the event title, then raising the bar to 12-7 and finally clearing 13-0 to set the new 3A state meet and Central Texas record. Southlake Carroll Runner Wins 1,600 Meters at 5A State Meet

UIL Provides Graduation Ceremony for Athletes at State

'Friday Night Lights' Coach Gaines Rehired to Lead Permian

Nearly two decades after he left Odessa Permian, the coach at the center of the Friday Night Lights book and film is back on the sidelines for the famous high school team. Gary Gaines moved into college coaching just after leading the school to a state title in 1989, and then worked in athletics administration. Now he's returned to help turn around a storied prep football program that has fallen far from the days he first led the team.
