Lock-in is Key to Unity for Parish Episcopal Football Team from The Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
At 4:50 a.m. Monday, a blaring air horn turned calm into chaos at Parish Episcopal High School. Forty-six groggy and confused football players bolted up from their air mattresses, stepped into their shoes and ran for the door. Most people will never experience anything like Parish Episcopal's five-day football camp lock-in. Most people would say that's a good thing. In addition to enduring two practices and a three-mile run each day, the football players were banned from using cell phones, iPods and all other electronic devices. The players didn't even have watches. More
Stony Point's Chessher Has Little Pressure but High Hopes from the Austin American-Statesman Five years ago, Craig Chessher packed his state championship trophy, moved from a Houston suburb to Central Texas and promptly went 0-10 with his first football team at Stony Point. A lot has happened since Chessher left Galena Park North Shore in 2004 to step into his first head coaching job. More
North Shore Looks to Extend Regular-season Winning Streak from the Houston Chronicle North Shore surpassed Southlake Carroll last season for the longest regular-season winning streak in state history, a streak that stands at 78 games. Dignity Defined Former Coach Lopez from the San Antonio Express-News With touch that belied his burly frame, Roland Lopez painted the ceramic models one delicate stroke at a time.As the years wore on, his home filled with a small army of Santa Claus statuettes, each depicting the mythical gift-giver in different garb from around the world.Once one 57-piece collection was complete, he simply started over. “We lived in a world of Santas,” daughter Gema Anzaldua recalled. And basketball, too. In between his many artistic projects, Lopez, who died this past weekend following a two-year bout with pancreatic cancer, found the time to win 567 games in 30 seasons as a coach at Hebbronville, Memorial, Harlandale and Fox Tech. Skyline Enters the Football Season with an Impressive Load of Talent
from The Dallas Morning News HS Game Time The crowd outside Skyline football coach Reginald Samples' office the last six months has resembled a scene from a doctor's office visit or a trip to the Department of Public Safety office to renew a driver's license. The line was so backed up – this one with notable college football coaches – you needed to take a number. Why all the fuss? Skyline is bursting at the seams with talent. The Raiders already have nine players who have orally committed to NCAA Bowl Subdivision schools, from Oklahoma and Texas A&M to LSU and Michigan. Scouts from coast to coast have made their way to Dallas to put their school's name in the hat for one of the star prospects. More

New Port Neches-Groves Coach Used to Great Expectations
from The Beaumont Enterprise Brandon Faircloth nearly oozes the blessing and the curse he has accepted as the head football coach at Port Neches-Groves. Thank goodness, it's more blessing.
Faircloth will happily accept the expectations of the Indians nearly rabid fan base in trade for the opportunity to be a part of a program of PN-G's stature. He calls the 2009 Indians caretakers of a proud tradition on the Reservation. Nothing is lost on the first-year coach who takes over for the school's winningest coach, Matt Burnett.

In Texas, Dunbar Standout White More than a Lone Star
from USA Today Here, on the east side, is The Stop Six. The name comes from the area being the sixth stop on a streetcar line to Dallas in the early 1900s, but its recent history — gangs, drugs, violence and despair — has been more synonymous with Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem Lyrics of a Lowly Life. Despite that, there's no place Darius White would rather be than the high school named after the late 1800s, early 1900s poet, where about 87 percent of the 1,104 students are black. More
Hydration is Part of Every Coach's Playbook
from Athletic Business Heat? What heat?
Connor Kruse, a three-year starter on Lowell's offensive line, is not concerned about the heat index as high school football preseason practice kicks off with a mandatory three days of conditioning.
The 6-foot-5, 306-pound senior simply wants to play.
"I've been ready since the end of last season," Kruse said, "and we don't talk about the weather in Lowell. Not if it's raining, not if it's hot -- we never talk about it."
Players might say they don't worry about warm temperatures, but area coaches and athletic trainers certainly take them into consideration.
