Gainesville State-Grapevine Faith a year later
the Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last November, Grapevine Faith treated the Gainesville State School football team as a home team, giving players from the maximum-security correctional facility a tear-through banner, a spirit tunnel, cheerleaders and fans who rooted for them by name. The teams meet again last Friday night, and the stories that have grown out of last year’s game testify to the wide-reaching impact that night has had—and continues to have. MORE

Eastside Memorial football coming up fast
the Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Far from the bright lights of Lake Travis or Bastrop is a high school football success story that very few have witnessed. It comes from Eastside Memorial High, the school formerly known as Johnston. Once labeled the "pride of Austin's East Side," Johnston is better known for shutting its doors in spring 2008 after five straight years of academic failure. The NCAA would call this the death penalty. Johnston football showed few signs of life when the coaching staff cut its final season short, fearing a depleted team would be subject to possible injury against bigger, more competitive schools. Because of injuries, apathy and academically ineligible players, the roster was trimmed to just 16 active players in 2007 before the season halted. The resurrection of football was on display last week, when Eastside, competing with a junior varsity schedule, played its final game of the season, a homecoming match against Crockett. More
Final taste for Chili Bowl?
the San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on
LinkedinE-mail article
When some Fox Tech players saw San Antonio Independent School District athletic director Gil Garza on the Alamo Stadium field last week, they were quick to ask the question that's bothered them all season. "Are we going to have a football team next year?" Nine days away from the Chili Bowl, there still isn't a definitive answer. The status of the Buffaloes team remains in limbo as the SAISD develops its restructuring plan. More

Playoff berth ends 26 seasons of frustration for Carrollton Newman Smith
The Dallas Morning News HS Game Time    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Carrollton Newman Smith's Zach Fleming didn't know what to think. For the life of him, the senior wide receiver couldn't figure out why his teammates were crying. After the Trojans began racking up win after win early in the season, some of Fleming's teammates couldn't hold back the tears. Fleming, in his first season at Newman Smith after transferring in from perennial power Hebron, wondered what all the fuss was about. More
Nederland football back in business
the Beaumont Enterprise    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On his 58th birthday, Nederland football coach Larry Neumann looked back at his career and came to the following conclusion: His 16th season at Nederland has undoubtedly been his most challenging. Injuries to his two starting quarterbacks - Kirby Bellow and Tyler Smith - along with a 1-4 start had many people thinking this could be a down year for one of the area's most successful programs. Lately, that has not been the case. A a new offensive package and a new quarterback has helped his team win two of its last three district games and has Nederland (3-5, 2-3) believing it can compete for one of the last two playoff spots in District 20-4A. NFL's influence on safety at youth levels is cited
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The voices belonged mostly to NFL executives, NFL doctors, NFL players and United States congressmen. But as they clashed in a House Judiciary Committee hearing on football brain injuries and how the league and its players union have handled the issue, consensus emerged on one point: How the NFL evolves from here will invariably influence safety at the youth football level. Short on numbers, six-man football has Texas-sized appeal
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The best little rivalry in Texas high school football resumed last Friday night in rural Palo Pinto County. The Strawn Greyhounds played host the Gordon Longhorns in a backyard battle between schools so small they play six-man football. The schools are tiny, but the appetite for football is big. The towns are eight miles apart and almost equidistant between Fort Worth to the east and Abilene to the west. The game often determines a district championship and has featured a state champion four times in the past 13 years. Gordon won two state titles in the 1990s under former coach Nelson Campbell. Strawn has captured two this decade under current coach Dewaine Lee, including last season. Six-man football is played on a smaller field with some different rules and high-scoring results. Three players are on the line but the center is not necessarily in the middle. There is a quarterback and two receivers/backs. More
Tigers fly high
the Corpus Christi Caller-Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Charles Coleman's athletic talents are obvious on the football field. He can run, hurdle and lay into opponents. But he’s a big film fan as well. The Carroll senior noticed something on film about King’s defense and applied it Friday. The Mustangs linebackers went low, so Coleman aimed high. Coleman's 237-yard effort—in only three quarters of action—was part of a balanced Tigers performance. The defense turned in a bravura effort and kicker John Nelson had a show-stopping cameo in Carroll’s 26-0 District 27-5A victory at Buc Stadium. More
