State Seems Happy with Expanded Playoff Format -- For Now
from Austin American-Statesman
Two decades ago, when the idea of expanding "the state playoff experience" for Texas high school athletes was at fever pitch, Bailey Marshall came up with a startling proposal: "Put everybody in the playoffs." Whether Marshall, now retired from his post as executive director of the University Interscholastic League, was deadly serious or joking, the march toward wholesale postseason participation has been relentless. The most recent evidence is Class 4A administrators' decision last spring to send four schools from each of 32 districts into the playoffs in all team sports. Class 5A overseers went from three qualifiers to four in 2006. More

Cypress Creek Football Completes Worst-to-First Turnaround
from Houston Chronicle
Even though they had their district title well in hand, there were few moments this season that topped the joy the Cypress Creek Cougars experienced in the third quarter of their 54-20 win over Cypress Springs. Down Syndrome Doesn’t Stop Jesuit Honorary Coach
from Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
Jesuit honorary assistant football coach Luke O'Brien is primed for a big night. "Big game, ok," he says. "Not gonna lose, gotta play hard." "He is sometimes the most fired up out of everyone on the team," says Jesuit safety Reed Breezette. "Whether he's talking to us before the game or at halftime he's always the most pumped up and trying to get us pumped up as well." "He's got a dynamic personality," says Jesuit coach Bob Wunderlich and Luke's uncle. "He puts on a show and I think he'll probably do it for a longtime." Luke's journey to the sideline is unlike any other coach's you've ever heard of. More

SAISD Athletic Director Looks Back on 1988's Famous Coin-flip
from San Angelo Standard Times
Doug McCutchen flipped over his 15 minutes of fame as a football coach 20 years ago tonight. Even though he took part in the most famous coin flip in the history of Texas high school football, it's not a memory McCutchen cherishes. He lost, leaving the veteran coach with a feeling he compared to the death of a family member. "It took quite a while for me to get over it," McCutchen said. "It took me well, it's been 20 years, and I still don't like to relive it. It was devastating." McCutchen, the Bronte High School football phenom from the late 1960s and later a starting running back for Texas Tech, is in his first year as athletic director for the San Angelo Independent School District. Twenty years ago, though, he was head coach of the Midland High Bulldogs. More

Clues to Help Explain Frequency of Injuries
from The New York Times
Exercise scientists say they have a few answers that can help with some common injuries. But all too often injuries remain a mystery and people may have to figure out how much exercise is too much for themselves and what sort of routines tend to produce injuries. Sometimes injuries have a simple fix — like making sure your bicycle fits properly or improving your swimming stroke. More often, they do not. And people tend to get the same injury repeatedly. More

For the first time in a long time, those in the Hanks High School girls basketball program believe this could be their year. Not since 2002, since the all-city mother-daughter tandem of Rhonda and Abbie Letz led Hanks to the District 2-5A title, have the Knights boasted this much talent. More
