Lake Travis One Win Away from Perfection

Coming off the school's first state football championship, the Cavaliers had become a Class 4A giant under former coach Jeff Dicus. Lake Travis had a good nucleus of players returning for another year, including a quarterback who will rewrite the University of Texas record book someday.

SAISD Athletic Director Looks Back on 1988's Famous Coin-flip
from San Angelo Standard Times Doug McCutchen flipped over his 15 minutes of fame as a football coach 20 years ago tonight. Even though he took part in the most famous coin flip in the history of Texas high school football, it's not a memory McCutchen cherishes. He lost, leaving the veteran coach with a feeling he compared to the death of a family member. "It took quite a while for me to get over it," McCutchen said. "It took me well, it's been 20 years, and I still don't like to relive it. It was devastating." McCutchen, the Bronte High School football phenom from the late 1960s and later a starting running back for Texas Tech, is in his first year as athletic director for the San Angelo Independent School District.
