Patients, Doctors Passionate but Calm at Health Care Forum
from The Austin American-Statesman Postcards Blog, Aug. 13, 2009
When doctors and patients gathered at the Texas Medical Association to discuss health care reform, Dr. Robert Gunby, a past president of the association, told the audience at the beginning that he hoped the event wouldn't be as rowdy as he's heard some recent town hall meetings have been. "Please, don’t hit us," he asked the audience, perhaps only half-jokingly.

Editorial: Tort Reform Must Be Part of Health Care Reform
from Gov. Rick Perry via The Washington Examiner, Aug. 13, 2009 To hear federal officials tell it, they've got all the answers on health care and it's up to the rest of us to sit, wait and embrace whatever solution - if any - they may eventually provide. I find this troubling, since states have shown they know a thing or two about solving problems that affect their citizens.

AMA on End-of-Life Debate: 'Egregious...Mischaracterization'
from The Wall Street Journal Health Blog, Aug. 13, 2009 Doctors don’t get paid for discussing end-of-life care with Medicare patients. That’s true whether the patient wants heroic measures taken to extend life in the hospital, or hospice care in the home. So, The Wall Street Journal notes, many doctors supported a provision in the big House health-care bill that would have paid physicians for talking to patients who chose to have discussions with their doctors about end-of-life care. But the outcry over the provision, amid assertions that a government "death panel" would decide whether patients live or die, has prompted the all-important Senate Finance Committee to exclude such a provision from their bill.

Small Businesses Queasy from Health Care Proposal
from The Austin Business Journal, Aug. 14, 2009 Like the freon in the air conditioners Stan Johnson’s company installs, his support for health care reform that’s been proposed has evaporated. Medication Shortage: MHMR Patients in Jeopardy
