Some say Austin has always had its share of "crazies," but now they're coming in the form of crawling ants that resemble spiders. The breed, known as Caribbean or Raspberry "crazy ants" are invading Central Texas, according to entomologists with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. The Supreme Court stepped into the fight over a tough Arizona law that requires local police to help enforce federal immigration laws — pushing the court deeper into hot, partisan issues of the 2012 election campaign. Texas' economy is moving more fully into recovery with job growth and higher-than-expected tax revenues, but the risk of a new recession remains, the state comptroller said. Giving measured hope to those battered by the economy, State Comptroller Susan Combs said that "the most likely scenario continues to be one of slow, steady recovery from the worst recession in our state since World War II." The Canadian peat shortage has led to the emergence of new suppliers to U.S. growers. One of those suppliers is Klasmann-Deilmann, a European-based producer that's partnered with ForemostCo to deliver a new peat product to the U.S. market. Texas approved a somberly worded plan that lays out where the state should spend $53 billion to cope with its water needs over the next half century, and warns that future droughts may mean not enough supply to keep up with growing demand. The 295-page report by the Texas Water Development Board says that to avoid a potentially thirsty future, the state should implement 562 infrastructure and conservation projects. Nestled near subdivisions north of Fort Worth stands equipment that measures air pollutants. On 26 days this year, readings at the site showed higher concentrations of lung-damaging ozone than is allowed by federal air-quality standards.
