How to Win Frugal Consumers and Influence Them to Buy from BusinessWeek
American shoppers are complex: They're excitable, but often creatures of habit; sensitive to influence, but harder to manipulate than marketers like to acknowledge. And now, as Americans consume more sparingly, an already complicated retail pas de deux has become even more so. More

New Diagnostic Test Keeps Your Internet Provider Honest from Fast Company Google has launched a new website in cooperation with a pair of nonprofit organizations. It does two things: it analyzes your network connection, and it makes companies like Comcast and TimeWarner wish that Google be wiped from the earth. By allowing access to diagnostic information about their Internet connections, the new site, called MeasurementLab.net, lets users expose interference from oppressive ISPs. In the past, some service providers have been known to stall or cap users who use more-than-average bandwidth - an unfair practice that makes net neutrality advocates livid. Last year, the FCC censured Comcast for "secretly degrading" the speed of users of peer-to-peer clients like BitTorrent, a practice known as discriminatory network management. More

The couple paid $155,000 for one of the first commercially cloned dogs in the world, and say the money was well spent. “He was a wonderful dog,” said Nina Otto, 66. “Money wasn’t an object. We just wanted our wonderful, loving dog back.” The project was masterminded by the California biotech company BioArts. More
Peanut Bummer from The Washington Post Even though he's not caught up in this mess, Mr. Peanut must want to clobber the geniuses at Peanut Corporation of America with his cane. The Food and Drug Administration revealed last week that the company's Blakely, Ga., facility knowingly shipped salmonella-tainted peanut products 12 times between 2007 and 2008 to locations in the United States and abroad. The company, based in Lynchburg, Va., has urged anyone in possession of its products made in the past two years to throw them out. The FDA says that more than 70 firms used the company's goods in all manner of foods, from cookies and pet food to ice cream and cereal. More
Outsourced Chores Come Back Home from The New York Times Susan Todoroff, a personal trainer in Ann Arbor, Mich., has begun brewing espressos at home and cutting her hair and cleaning her house herself. And Tamar A. Zaidenweber, a health care market researcher in Astoria, Queens, is spending more time walking her dog instead of taking it to day care each week. All of these consumers could praise themselves for their newfound frugality in the midst of an economic downturn. But every step they take toward self-reliance - each shrub they prune themselves, each cupcake they bake from scratch - hurts the people and small businesses that have long provided these services professionally.
