Pet Industry Shows Strength in Down Economy from The Bradenton Herald
The economy has gone to the dogs. That's according to a survey from IBISWorld, a market research firm, that has found that pet owners are still willing to spend money on their animal friends regardless of the recession. The report states that the pet business is expected to generate $51.6 billion this year, an increase of 1.3 percent from 2008. More
Run Cheap TV Commercials with Google TV Ads from Inc. Google tracks how many seconds viewers watch before changing the channel or hitting Fast Forward on their DVRs. Advertisers aren't charged when viewers watch less than five seconds of the ad or if they watch it later on a DVR, but if there are a lot of channel jumpers, that may indicate the ad isn't a good fit for that time slot. "It's like buying a banner ad, except when someone clicks the remote, it means that it wasn't relevant to them," says Michael Steib, director of Google TV Ads. More

FDA Seeks Comment on Reportable Food Registry Document from Pet Product News The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking input on a document created to assist the food industry in complying with new requirements that pertain to the reporting of adulterated food. The Reportable Food Registry (RFR) requires a responsible party to file a report through an FDA Internet portal when there is reason to believe that an adulterated food will cause serious adverse health consequences or death to humans and animals. The FDA's "draft guidance," provides questions and answers pertaining to the registry. More
California to Limit Possession of Dogs and Cats to Under 50 from PIJAC The California assembly has already passed, and the state senate is on the verge of passing, legislation that will prohibit any person from having more than 50 "unsterilized dogs and cats at any time used for the purpose of breeding or raising dogs or cats for sale as pets, or for the purpose of producing offspring from dogs or cats for sale as pets." Similar legislation has been introduced and defeated in states across the U.S. this year. California may be the first such state to actually enact this anti-pet, animal activist-sponsored initiative. The final hearing is scheduled for June 23. More
A New Breed from Pet Business While industry studies continue to report a healthy rise in pet ownership among U.S. households, many experts are concerned that this growth may not be sustainable over the long term as baby-boomers - the demographic group widely considered most responsible for the recent boom in pet ownership - continue to age. As this generation makes the transition from empty nesters to senior citizens, keeping up with the responsibilities associated with owning a pet will become more difficult, and in many cases, impossible.
