California Bill to Phase Out Puppy Sales Poised for Final Passage
from PIJAC The Assembly has already passed, and the Senate is on the verge of passing, legislation that will prohibit any person from having more than 50 "unsterilized dogs and cats at any time used for the purpose of breeding or raising dogs or cats for sale as pets, or for the purpose of producing offspring from dogs or cats for sale as pets." Because the number of dogs permitted under this bill is completely arbitrary, proponents are advocating for the lowest limit they believe will be adopted in law. Next year, they can come back and seek to limit it further.

Officials: Trapper Faked Capture of 14 Foot Python

Mars Donates $2 Million for Human-Animal Interaction Research
from Pet Product News The Waltham Center for Pet Nutrition, a division of Mars Inc., recently committed more than $2 million to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) for Human-Animal Interaction research (HAI). The NICHD, a division of the National Institutes of Health, will combine the donation with funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research to form what it says is the first formal program in HAI.
