Central Garden & Pet Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal 2008 Results from Central Garden & Pet Central Garden & Pet Company announced fourth quarter and full year results for its fiscal year ended Sept. 27, 2008. The company reported net sales of $414 million in the quarter, an increase of three percent compared to $401 million in the comparable fiscal 2007 period. Florida Pet Stores Could Face Surprise Inspections from Santa Rosa's Press Gazette On Monday, Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson announced that his department is conducting a sweep of pet stores during the next five weeks to ensure that such establishments are complying with regulations that protect consumers in the purchase of pets. Inspectors are visiting numerous pet stores and dealers between now and Jan. 1 to make sure that a store or dealer is complying with Florida Statute 828.29, a law that imposes certain obligations on sellers and offers recourse to consumers in the event that problems arise. Canadian Courts Approve Menu Foods Deal from Grainews Courts in nine provinces have given final approval to a deal that will settle over 100 proposed class actions against Toronto pet food maker Menu Foods. This week's approvals in Canada clear the way for payouts to eligible North American pet food consumers from the company's US$24 million settlement fund, which would allow a "potential recovery of up to 100 per cent of all economic damages incurred by pet owners, subject to certain limitations," Menu Foods said previously. Mars Extends Pet Food Recall from Consumer Affairs Mars Petcare US is extending a recall of dry pet food after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported finding Salmonella in additional samples of the company's Special Kitty Gourmet Blend cat food. The earlier recall, issued Oct. 27, was for cat food produced at Mars' Allenton, Pa., plant on Aug. 11, 2008. The recall is now being extended to cover all dry pet food produced at the plant with a "best by" date between Aug. 11, 2009 and Oct. 3, 2009. More
