MultiView Halloween: Creativity and teamwork at its finest
Picture this. It’s a Monday morning, and you’re ready to get your week started in typical fashion, but instead of being greeted by the sight of your coworkers in their “case of the Mondays” moods, you’re met by characters from Game of Thrones, Will Ferrell impersonators, the ever-so-weird Borat, and even the staff of your local watering hole. What world is this, you ask? Well, it’s MultiView on Halloween.
If you asked any employee about holidays at MultiView, the first one you’d most likely hear about is Halloween. Though it’s come and gone this year, the memories from MultiView Halloween 2017 are sure to last. You see, we don’t just throw on cat ears and put candy out around the office. No, we take it to the NINES! I’m talking homemade costumes, custom face and body paint, clever themes and some way-out-of-the-box, outrageous ideas come to life. And I’m not just talking about one or two employees who really love Halloween; I’m talking about an entire office full of awesome costumes.
According to Courtney Stroot, MultiView’s director of sales administration, “MultiView Halloween is the greatest company event in the history of company events. What other corporate office can say all 400 employees dress up on one specific day? MultiView is the King of Halloween and everyone knows it.”
Kaylee Holzapfel, MultiView’s director of content marketing, adds: “At many companies, you would feel like a misfit for going all out on your work costume; here, you would feel like a misfit if you didn’t go all out.”
I know you may be thinking, “Don’t costumes in the workplace cause a huge distraction?” Well, the answer to that question is pretty interesting. Yes, the costumes definitely create conversations outside of normal business topics, creating a more laid-back environment than you might expect, but that’s pretty much been MultiView’s shtick from the beginning — work hard, play hard.
Over the years, we’ve learned that giving employees the freedom to dress up gives them a unique opportunity to express themselves. I mean, come on … our expertise is digital marketing. Keeping our team wired for creativity keeps us ready for the next big tech trend that will help our customers and partners succeed.
Our talent acquisition specialist, Kelsey Grimm, said, “It’s a little nerve-wracking to get dressed up in a costume sometimes, but knowing that everyone goes all out makes it that much more fun to participate. Plus, you get to see people’s personalities and creativity come out, too, which is really cool.”
We’ve also found that the excitement of the day, in particular the costume contest, actually generates teamwork and productivity. Teams from different departments come together to try to outdo their competition — teams that may not really interact until something as special as Halloween comes along. And for those teams that come back year after year, vying for the coveted headless-skeleton trophy, their bond just becomes that much stronger — strength that lasts well beyond a Halloween party.
“There’s something really special about planning a big group costume and then seeing how everyone pulls it off when you walk into the office,” said Ronnie Richard, MultiBriefs‘ publication manager. “We knock it out of the park every year!”
Grimm adds, “There is such a sense of camaraderie that is felt not only in your own department, but throughout the whole company — that’s not something you can find at just any company.”
So, yes, there is some level of distraction on Halloween at MultiView, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives. We have excited employees shown creative freedom and fun, and that’s what makes us so successful. To put it a different way, talent acquistition specialist Chelsea Johnson said this: “Dressing up and competing makes work seem less like ‘work.'” Now, who wouldn’t want that kind of attitude from your employees?
